Welp, they're not exactly "boothgirls" YET...
I'm trying to advise them on breaking into the convention circuit this year as they've expressed interest when I brought it up.  Basically, it's a troupe of about a dozen club-dancers ("It girls") from the D.C. area.  Most are ridiculously gorgeous and have sick amounts of talent.  But, the main thing is they do their own professional hair/makeup/costuming.
Their main shtick is bringing a bit more modern cosplay to the go-go scene.  I've used them occasionally over the summers here to "bring the party" for my boss so to speak.... which they're good at.

So my developer friends on here, lend me a hand.  Advice, referrals, contacts? gimme!  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?
What kind of money do these ladies make anyways?

And no, I cannot post pics presently as I dont have permission yet.   Ohhhhh, I see.

The boothgirls we've hired in the past have been through agencies that supply local convention halls. Generally exhibitors will go through an agency for simplicity and accountability. Mostly the girls that are on the books are local students who spend their weekends alternately pretending to be super-excited about tractors/plumbing supplies/video games/etc. If your friends want to break into that then they should probably find out which agencies are serving the local events and get signed up. That will increase their chances by several orders of magnitude.

If Iain's correct, they should also go ahead and realize that there's going to be the usual "Dues paying" portion of the job. Like everything else, they might really find the idea of being a boothgirl for a gaming or comic convention fun and exciting and a neat way to make money....

But they're probably going to have to pay for that by doing tractor shows, boat shows, etc.

In the end, boothgirls are pretty women draped over "stuff" in an effort to make the "Stuff" seem more appealing. Unless they are just truly phenomonal at selling objects via their hotness, so much so that they can dictate their own jobs, they're going to have to sell boring shit too.

Hey, I'm local so I'm available to inspect in-person.  awesome, for real

So what are we talking about here, local George Washington/George Mason students?

And what do you mean by "It girls" ? I think I know what you mean, but the terms I would normally use...are not for polite company.

Yeah, my only experience hiring booth-girls was E3 2001, we just called an agency and told them we needed a brunette, a blond, and a redhead for the show, 8 hours a day.  They sent us a bunch of head shots and told us that we had to pay an extra day for the costume fitting.

Then the girls weren't happy because their outfits were too modest (we went for authentic medieval rather than renn-faire wench), because it reduced their chances of getting noticed and posted into the "booth babes of E3" collections online (which would be good for their future employment prospects).

Generally...not necessarily.  There's some overlap of strippers and escorts with "model" in general.  We didn't ask, they didn't say.  Their job was to hang around the booth, take pictures with anyone that asked, and refer any questions about the game or appointments to one of the Mythic employees.

Pretty much what IainC said, hook up with an agency. At least at a video game show nobody is going to spend their time contracting individuals or groups without representation unless they know them or something.

So the agency used is dependent on the particular convention hall?  e.g. the hall refers you to an agent
Or, do you guys find your own agencies?

PM me with the agent pleasethanks, but I'm gonna assume you're implying a shotgun approach to this.  Splurge the portfolio to all the local agencies I guess.  pfft

Oh, and these ladies wont shine with your typical "CarShow" type gig.  They're bred more to bring the noise in costume, hype a show or party, do a dance routine, maybe pour drinks, serve food, and even DJ if needed.  I wouldnt refer them to a job where they just stand there in a dress-suit pointing to a Ferrari.

Why not just shotgun all the nicer clubs in the tri-state area; DC, Baltimore...I'm not sure there are really any "clubs" in Arlington/Alexandria, etc.

And if this is their sort of thing, I'm not sure what the problem would be with a Ferrari gig - I'm sure Ferrari pays good money.

No, you find an agency in the town where the convention is because the girls aren't being paid enough to travel outside their local area and because any town with a convention centre/expo hall will have staffing agencies to support the events there - everything from caterers to boothgirls.

I didn't book the girls for the shows I was at but basically it works the way that Dave described. You ask for X number of warm bodies and can specify certain attributes if you need to (hair colour, size, ethnicity etc) you also say what kind of costumes the girls will be wearing (you will provide the costumes). The agency sends you a bunch of headshots and you pick the ones you like. For Leipzig we had the same girls several years runnign because they liked working for us. From their side they fill out a basic profile questionnaire, get their photo taken and wait for the agency to get back to them. The questionnaire is mostly about what kind of limits they have with clothing options (which is matched to the type of costume the customer will be providing) and their availability rather than anything more personal.

If your girls are acting as a troupe then a decent agent should be able to market them as that rather than as generic boothgirls and get them gigs where they are doing whatever it is that they do. They should still sign up with at least one agency though in the town where they are based because otherwise they won't get much work doing anything beyond shitty nightclub stuff.

Thanks, I'll get em on it.

So they are couple of girls who work as slutbox dancers?

No, not that simple but they do/have worked as "slutbox dancers" before.  Sometimes they indeed work the stripclubs though, gogo shows, private parties (like raves, musicfests, and what-not), etc.  For example they got flown down to Miami to work the stages at Ultra.  I hire them to tend my bar and keep people smiling, which they excel at because they've got great attitudes - something many "boothgirls" severely lack.

Part of this whole thing is to try and break them out into something different and less "scummy" I guess.  A few of these girls are indeed the Gtown/GM type, some with degrees or working on degrees.  A few are VERY bright and probably should be doing something else (the one in the pic is studying to be an IP lawyer for instance).  I figure I can help them out and expose them to a different scene, whilst maybe bringing something a bit edgier to these largely docile conventions.

It's also not like it's easy to find intelligent, party-oriented, nice/happy, highly skilled in dance and gymnastics, DJing, beautiful girls who can self-cosplay.  All the while they genuinely enjoy what they do.  (shrug)  I will say the odds of finding such a female are pretty high in the D.C. college/party-scene though.  They grow girls like this on trees here, even if they dont work the clubs.  And I highly doubt an agency in Indianapolis for instance (for GenCon) would be able to produce similar local talent.   Maybe prettier girls, but that's about it... which is why I thought this group would do best in an active show, not simply standing there looking good in front of a car (they dont quite have the right looks for that).

I know 3 of em.  Friend of a friend and all that.  Never went to any of their other parties, I hired 'em for my own.  Savvy?

I was saying in a roundabout way the exact same thing, which is why they (save one of them) wouldnt excel in certain boothgirl situations (like the ones where you just stand there and be gorgeous).  They're your typical dancers, all body for the most part (minus boobage).
