The dark helmet from that particular castle you got it from has a bug in that the changes it applies are permanent.  Other dark helmets, those that sometimes randomly appear in wise women's shops and such, do not have that bug.  Amusingly it can have some useful effects for an evil character - good characters that normally don't adventure with you if you're evil, I believe, will do so if they are evil too - turned evil by the helm counts.

I'm not sure but I think the bug is fixed in one of the unofficial patches or something, but I suppose you must not be playing with that particular one.

-Do you honestly think that we believe ourselves evil? My friend, we seek only good. It's just that our definitions don't quite match.-

Wiping out crime lords always pays well. I also like the guilty conscience angle. That's a good device for your questing.

Holy crap...I think I only ever got as far as that elf that hooks you into the Underground, way back...I was trying to fight him, and he would just annihilate my party.

EDIT: Also, are you running any sort of mods on the game? Just bought it recently and want to be sure I have the necessary tools to make it playable...someday.

Help yourself to the link. They pretty much host most of the required mods...

I only installed the Unofficial Patch and the High resolution patch. (16:9 compatible!)

Ha, tiny blade to kill an elf. You'd think they would have planned that better in the game.

FINISH GAME ALREADY! Even though I own it now, I feel like there's hardly a point for me to actually play it.
