Shit, reminds me that I need to see if Volition still needs testers since I am unemployed and they are like 100 feet from my old office.

Awesome. Really enjoyed SR2, it was everything GTA4 should have been. Most importantly it didn't take itself too seriously.

If I were to try out the prior games, is it worth it to play the first one first, or just skip it and go to SR2?

Insurance fraud was so awesome. Get on the highway and spend 30 seconds just flying and bouncing off trucks.

I never played the first one, just went straight for 2, and it was fine, didn't feel like I was missing something. Unlike, for instance, Assassin's Creed 2, which made no sense at all jumping in at 2.

Skip the first one. The second is absolutely worth your time, though - especially if you have someone to play it co-op with.

What's bad about the first one? I tried that, and what I thought was annoying about it was the controls were just illogical in a way GTA wasn't (I forget the details).

It's not that Saint's Row is bad, it's just nowhere near as good as SR2 was, and you don't really miss anything by skipping it.

Also if you can play the game (sr2) co-op its amazing. I have never laughed so hard as playing the escort mini-game. I was yelling at a friend to "work the shaft" while evading the reporters.

I've tentatively slotted SR2 (with gameplay fixes, GotR etc) after I finish F:NV, which is starting to drag a bit.

I loved Saint's Row 2 but hated, hated, hated the strong, strong push it made for Co-Op, especially with its achievements. I actually ignored / avoided activities because I kept thinking to myself "I am going to have to do all this shit again with another person."
Nice to see every dude in a suit and every woman in 4"+ heels.

That's the intent. It's part of the humor of Saints Row.

SR1 is very good. SR2 is awesome. I'd play through both, to be honest.

Really? I disliked Grand Theft Auto for being all 'gansta' and taking itself too seriously. To me Saints Row comes across as a parody.

I chose the Australian persona. That fixed a LOT of things. Super awesome.

That you have the choice of male or female means I'm going to give it a try next Steam sale. I figured it'd be like all the rest of the GTA genre so I never paid attention to it.
(Though watching over the shoulder, the Ballad of Gay Tony was the only story of the GTA series itself which kept my interest.)

It is and it isn't. It takes on gangsta stereotype so completely in such an over the top way that it's clearly self-parody and parody of the entire genre. Plus it's got Worf in it!

Yeah, I did this too. I was just dismayed at the focus of the game, no matter what my accent was. I mean, in the character customization the walk style was like "Normal" and "Thug 1" "Thug 2" "Thug 3" all the way to thug 8 or something with a sort of rolling swagger that made me want to punch my monitor. I played an hour or two but just stopped caring because I didn't feel like earning enough "Street cred". I uninstalled when my character's plan for dealing with an enemy was to bust into a high security courtroom, kill the witness, and then get out again. Somehow. With zero planning or forethought. It was just so incredibly stupid and framed so poorly that I quit in disgust half way through the mission.

GTA4 didn't strike me as very "gangsta", to me it was just a guy having no morals and no limits on what he would do to advance himself.

Here's what I stumbled upon on another site. It's an additional paragraph to the press release posted only on Game Informer, which doesn't have it. So take it with a grain of salt. Take a tank skydiving, call in a satellite-targeted airstrike on a Mexican wrestling gang, and defend yourself against a highly-trained military force using only a sex toy in the most out- landish gameplay scenarios ever seen, igniting a city-wide war that will set Steelport on fire. Strap it on. http://sticktwiddlers.com/2011/03/03/news-saints-row-the-third-details-announced/?18019000

He likes EVE style planning of breaking into the court. 5 hours of planning, 1 hour of actual gameplay.

Yep. I just wish there was more planning than "Got your 9? I got my 9, let's bounce!" type guns blazing stuff. :(
It just seemed so dumb. I wake up from a coma, everything I had is gone, and the first thing I do is just charge what amounts to a heavily armed fortress without any attempt at stealth or even building up a basic base of operations, any intelligence, or really anything at all. Using the pistol I got from a prison guard, that I had escaped from an hour ago.
