Anyone here know anything about Roanoke?  Big opportunity coming up for me - but its a huge move.  Looks nice on the interwebs.

Yes! Awesome place. 100k population so big enough for most everything you need while maintaining a small town/mountain town feel. The economy weathered the recent downturn fairly well from what I have been told.
Its especially nice if you are into the outdoors at all (close to skiing, the Appalachian Trail, Blueridge Mountains, etc etc), if you are more into a thriving opera company and symphony not so much. I dont know anything about the local school system if you have kids.

Opening a new thread.  Need some input on Roanoke ASAP.  Is it anything like Winston-Salem, NC?  More like SC?  Heeeelp.

No Nerf, but I put a link to this very thread and I said that you all can guarantee for my purity. I even mentioned your case, and see if they can take a look at your lawn from a Michigan perspective.

Its like neither.
Winston-Salem last time I went through (which admittedly was a decade ago) smelled like tobacco (the WHOLE town) and was infested with gang violence with an absolutely decrepit school system. It was a southern version of a steel mill town, running into ruin.
Same for most of SC except for Charleston.

Again Roanoke still has some of that conservative/manufacturing vibe that you get in Southern towns, but being so close to the mountains it also has a thriving local artist, hippie town, mountain town feel to it.

I'd rather eat a bag of dicks than visit Roanoke again, let alone live there.

Oh come on, it isn't that bad. Actually it might be, I've only ever gone there to visit StarCityGames for various things. Sure is purty tho.

I am suspicious of Virginia in general and have only been to Richmond for any proper amount of time, so I'm going to put a lot of stock in the bag of dicks comparison.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

VA is one of the $3200 speeding ticket states, too.  They use traffic offense fines to pay for their roadwork, I think.

Which is sort of funny when you consider that Virginians all have vanity plates and no knowledge of how to control a vehicle.

Maybe the word I wanted was "sad".

Driving in Virginia is a sport. Every other place I've been has worse drivers.

Anything over 80 is wreckless, though I did 151 on the stretch between Tokyo Rose and West End (Henrico). That was awesome.

Roanoke is still boring as hell. I'm pretty sure Ched would live in a Leper Colony for enough money though, so I don't think anyone's opinion matters.

What? No way. Are you discounting the DC metro area?

They just upped a number of stretches to 70-75 in some places.

267 is still 55 though.  God forbid they cut their revenue stream by raising it to something sane.
