I'm enjoying it. The combat is fast paced and visceral, there are enough stats to scratch that RPG loot itch and the game keeps things tense by making even the crappy zombies a threat if you get surrounded. Worth picking up if you're bored and have nothing better to play. But with the slew of AAA releases coming out now it'll probably get buried and forgotten which is a shame - if they'd got it out for the summer drought it probably would have been quite successful. Would be less impressed if I'd encountered the crash and save bugs some people have been reporting but it's been rock solid here.

Still having lots of fun. I logged into each character to see what their skill trees look like, and someone needed some help putting that all together. Why does the thrown weapons specialist have a +blunt weapons as his very first combat skill? It's all put together so haphazardly.
Regardless, fun.

Some bright spark has figured out how to change the FOV: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2107491There have been people claiming to have a FOV fix that involves hex editing some *.dll files which is a big no-no for VAC, which can result in you being banned, there is a much easier way to edit the CameraDefaultFOV cvar located in Data0.pak/Data/Skills/default_levels.xml To do so, simply extract the file, locate your Dead Island folder in your user's documents folder, where your audio and video settings are already saved, and create a "Data" folder, a "Skills" subfolder, and place the default_levels.xml in the skills sub folder. Open the file, edit away. Screenshots: 90 degree FOV: http://i.imgur.com/ZG9pe.jpg62.5 (default) FOV: http://i.imgur.com/w8H3e.jpgTo be clear, your DeadIsland folder should have this structure: DeadIsland ->out ->->data ->->->skills ->->->->default_levels.xml ->->logs ->->settings

I haven't found weapons too breaky. I'll fully upgrade a couple of my favourite weapons, take the weapon durability perks and mainly reserve them as finish moves against the normal zombies. Have to be a bit more gung-ho with those muscle man zombies of course or swing away like mad if I'm surrounded but by and large I'm careful. Haven't had my favorite weapons break yet being conservative like that. Repairing also seems decently affordable so you can hang onto your beloved zombie mashing tools - it's the upgrading you have to be judicious with.
It's a shame that 3rd person hack video is floating around because that's not representative of the animation you'll see in normal gameplay at all. The zombies move wonderfully and really give a sense of slow lumbering, fast chasing or generally gibbering around like zombies do. Best mighty boot since Duke Nuke'em too.
Fuck I'm being a total fanboi and it's really not anything special. Just think the internet buzz is being a little harsh on this one.

The big thugs are fun. I've found the best tactic so far to be to break both their arms with a couple of well placed swings using a heavy blunt weapon (also if you're lucky you can knock them over, which is pretty much game over for them). After that, they're pussycats and can be taken out at your leisure.
Switch out to a simple baseball bat or something cheap for trash, and save your good weapons for harder zombies. Spend a lot less cash on repairs that way.

Serious question - does it feel like a budget title that's being sold/priced as a full-price AAA title? Also, what formats are people playing this on? If it's taking .ini hacks etc to fix up the game I'd be concerned about buying the console version until it's had some patches seep through.

It's a rather lazy port with a console UI, bloom out the ass and few concessions to PC gaming mores but maiming zombies, collecting loot and open world gameplay is a winning combination. If you like the sound of a Crysis/Borderlands/Zeno Clash hybrid and have a high tolerance for consolitis then consider taking a punt.

Well that's the thing. From the little I've seen it looks like an alright game, but very rough around the edges, so working out where it sits in the scheme of things is probably worthwhile. Once the patches come out, I'll be able to work out if it's better for a console or PC purchase, since it looks like something I can play co-op with the wife when I eventually purchase it - and she's more comfortable with console controls for things that aren't MMOs.

31mb 1.10 patch just pushed on the PS3 version. Seems a bit more fluid, textures not popping as much as they were. Looting is a tad faster it seems. I wonder if this puts it close to the x360 performance?
Save bugs seem a lot better too.

Having fun playing with a friend on the PC version. The always on microphone with seemingly no option to turn off is very obnoxious though.

The multiplayer issues on the PC seem to be worked out now. Whereas I used to get an error message every time I started the game up about how a multiplayer lobby couldn't be created or somesuch, I'm now able to see and join games (although I haven't really bothered yet because I'm only playing 20-30 minutes at a time right now).

PUG multi is a bit amusing to me, because every match I've joined has been people trying to make a four player friends only match and being suddenly amazed they have open joins enabled.
Overall, this game is.. a decent concept with rather low production values across the board. And there is a shitload of trying to hide bad texture work with bloom.

Sadly, I can't finish it yet because of the PS3 save bug. The game really needs a forced save function, instead I'm at the whim of the game deciding to save it for me. It does really weird stuff, like tonight... I started with my level lost and my quests revoked. So I put my skill point into my lost level and did the quest again. Then I turned the game off, logged back in. This time, it saved my quest progress but didn't save my skill point.
I'm cool with waiting for another patch, but I'm going to be severely torqued if they just drop the ball on this fix.
The sad part about this game is that its SO close to being a great game; instead it is merely a good game when it works. In a perfect world, the devs could all stay on to fix it up and push more content. I'd love to see the game de-jankified.

Ouch.
I sent Deep Silver a tech ticket, just letting them know of the PS3 save issue. It got kicked back to me because they 'exceeded storage allocation' on their email...

Not surprising considering the launch of this game. I'm sure there's a backlog of people complaining about messed up saves, unable to launch..etc. Despite that, Phire and I are enjoying the hell out of this game. There's nothing more satisfying than gang beating a Thug, breaking both his arms and then going to town ping-pong style. Also, getting the skill that allows you to stomp heads is a must. So satisfying. Anyone else find the zombie drowning sound to be eerily representative of what it would sound like to actually see that?

Once you get the upgraded version that allows flying stomps without pausing, it makes things a touch too easy. Swing at a bunch of legs, then bounce around like a demented pogo stick jumping from head to head. Still, it IS fun.

I'm afraid to play Singleplayer for this very reason. It's janky, but I can accept that with how much fun I'm having in co-op. Don't know if I would be as forgiving if it was just me by myself.

Well, that's not representative of typical gameplay, but... Apparently 360 was the version to get. I don't have any bugs or patches, just either a lack or surplus of polish depending on perspective. Load times are very short. Controls during MP are a bit "off" but in SP they are very serviceable. I have a much easier time getting headshots in SP than MP, for example. It's a ton of fun, that's basically the thing you need to know. I've played the resort in SP and last night three of us did the town's church hub. I hosted so the zeds were about lv10-12 while one of the team was lv20, so it played rather differently since normally in the town you really, really need to "kick-n-run". Weapon system is good, rather like Borderlands meets Dead Rising 2. Looted weapons have grades of expected colors: white, green, blue, orange. Modifying these requires you to have located a recipe and also have the materials, which thankfully do not take up inventory space. Deodorant + duct tape = "deo-bomb" which is your first grenade (I need to see if I can find a place to get deodorant, though molotovs are fun as well). Baseball bat + other shit = flaming bat, or bat with a spinning blade on the tip, or bat with nails in it. Certain mods work on certain weapons, meaning you can use the Nail'd mod to put nails on wooden blunt weapons, but you need another one whose name I forget to put bolts on a metal baseball bat. So far weapon mods also have elemental properties like electricity, fire, poison. For some reason (don't think too much) you can poison a zombie, and also drown them which makes pools a great place to stand. Also electricity, which makes them twitch; my MP friend last night put an electric mod on brass knuckles and was doing a low-key version of that zombie hadoken video. You can break bones and cut off limbs, effectively removing that attack from a zed. Fire will burn off skin, and for some reason pool water melts faces. I have not seen a shopping mall yet, but so far it's packing zombie cliches all over the place. The starter ones are Walkers, which are Romero style. Soon enough you find Infected, which are 28 Days Later style. Eventually you find Suiciders which are exploders (L4D?), and then Rams which I think are based on Nemesis from Resident Evil. Then of course you find human Punks who shoot at you and drop guns. I had an armored car... uh, armored more, which is probably from several zombie flicks. It's not perfect but it's close enough and a lot of fun.

I shudder thinking of berserkers. You run into one, you better have your fury up.[/me]
I think the game is balanced for co-op play doing the last mission in sp is a death loop for me.

I agree, it is easier in MP, but note that the zeds are leveled by the host. Also, controls are not as nice.
I'm thinking smarter play is the key here, but I haven't gotten too far into the city so I might be way off on something.
I got one of the Sekrit mod blueprints last night. Pretty sure I don't have the stuff to use it yet.

I didn't have much of a problem in the city, but it is a playstyle change. Both to prevent you from running around without looking (surprise suiciders everywhere), and a sudden shift towards multiple Infected running from odd angles. Really, if you die a lot it's probably Infected doing you in. The only defense against close range Infected is kick spam.
Multi seems easier just because some of the zombies will go after the other dude, so you can flank. In single, everything in a pack just wants you dead, so there's no breathing room.
