Picked it up as part of the box set, was not impressed.

Just seemed to preachy to me. Maybe I just know enough about what happened leading upto and prior to the crash. It was as if Stone took every marketable line anyone said prior to, during or after the crash and then shoe horned it to fit into the story.

Stone figured out that the original movie did not teach the lesson he expected it to, and that Wall Street actually idolized Gordon Gecko. So I'm not surprised he wrote the sequel as heavy handed as you say.

I think they learned the lesson from the first movie :  The lesson was Don't Get Caught.
