So, after reading the reviews, I couldn't figure out how Ryan Gosling and Michelle Fucking Williams could possibly make this movie as good as they say. I've heard about the stuff they did prior to the film to prepare, but I still couldn't believe it.

Probably my second favorite movie of the year behind The Social Network, but I'm going to see The King's Speech tomorrow, so we'll see how that holds up. Seeing Rabbit Hole also.

Seriously, Blue Valentine was fucking amazing. Go now.

Once you get married sitting in a theater being shown a marriage dissolving loses its appeal.

It's actually both the marriage and the divorce, shown in tandem as time passes. But feel free to miss a great movie because you think it'll make you feel insecure or something. I've heard other people say that about the movie and thought it was crazy when they said it also.

Not dismissing your taste or that your opinion that it might be an excellent story, cast and film is spot on. You are probably right on all counts.
Just saying sometimes things hit a bit to close to the bone to be comfortable. Which is how many of my married friends feel about this movie.
Same reason so many people were so emotional about Marley & Me it wasnt just having to watch the dog die, it was watching the husband/father have to come to grips with his life with wife and kids and all the dreams/fantasies he was never going to realize...his existential mid-life crisis. The dog was just an emotional excuse for the tears, the true pain was for the loss of youth and years gone by and dreams/aspirations unfulfilled.

I have enough pain and sadness in life, I prefer my entertainment to be a bit more uplifting is all.
