I've actually been having some fun with this. I think the problem is that people were expecting a pseudo RTS like Dungeon keeper, when in fact it could really be called something like "Dungeon Tychoon." Once you see this as a kind of dungeon management simulator, its actually far more enjoyable, and I've been having a pit of fun planning out where to put my creature spawn points and piles of gold to draw the heroes into the center where my character is waiting to bash them over the head. Granted its not the best 'be evil' game ever, but when you look at it the right way its not too bad.
Total agreement on the annoying voice of the 'helper' though. I'm seriously considering recording his lines and modding them in so I don't have to listen to him.
I can see how they could make that comparison, yeah. In this you are penalized if your "defenses" actually kill the bad guys though, but you can certainly use then to weaken them.
I have been playing Dungeons: Steam Edition over the last week. Very happy with it. Hero farming is lots fun. I get very annoyed when a hero escapes even if its not critical. Fucking mages recalling out.
