Alexandra Tobias was arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse and murder after her 3-month-old son, Dylan Lee Edmondson, died in January. Prosecutors said Tobias admitted to becoming angry because the baby would not stop crying while she was playing Farmville on Facebook.

What the fuck is right, it's not like you even need to babysit Farmville. THAT'S HALF THE POINT.

I wish that I could say that this surprises me.  Having worked in pediatrics, nothing surprises me anymore.

This had nothing to do with Farmville, the woman was clearly not ready for motherhood and on-edge after months of crying baby fraying her nerves.  She could've been doing anything at all, it was just random chance that she was playing Farmville when she hit the last straw.

The crazy thing about 3 month olds (and younger!) is that if they're crying it's almost always because they're hungry or need changed. His first year I don't think Charley cried over five minutes total. And it's not like you really have to keep that close an eye on them, either. Until he was moving around on his own, he spent hours attached to me with one of those padded papoose-sling things while my wife and I went about our business.

TLDR: feed and change your kid when it cries and it'll be lot less annoying.

A bit of attention never hurts, either.

In one of my various philosophy classes at OSU I wrote a very strong paper arguing against the death penalty.  It was likely the hardest I worked on a 12 pager and by far my best grade in all of college, mainly because of how vehemently I believed in it.  It's amazing to me that in just a short 10 years time my opinion on capital punishment has changed pretty radically.

Coincidentally, Florida has one of the worst state track records on accidents during executions, with heads catching fire during electrocutions and improper amounts of drugs administered during injection.  Maybe we'll get lucky with this one!  (Though likely she won't see the DP in this case, just being a burden on our system so she can play Farmville from prison now.)

Our first child had a crying jag that went on for a week or so during her first year.  One day, she started crying, seven to ten days later, she stopped crying.  We never could figure out why she started or stopped.  Best guess, she was sick with the flu.  Maybe.  I dunno.

It was a very long week.

A woman playing farmville with a child in a stroller decided the child would be mollified if she waved a slip of yellow paper in front of the child. Upside is, after ten minutes of the kid crying she actually left without having to be spoken to.

Daily occurrence in the library, parents always coming in for whatever facebook/gambling/waste of time thing and ignoring their bored kids. And not even using the children's room, where at least the kids could play with some puppets or puzzles or something.

you need a secret override control james bondy thingy, so when things like this happen whatever computer they happen to on has the screen go black with the bold red words "you are a douche" flashing.

I can see it now, the awkard pause as the parent looks around to see if anyone is noticing.

We had that exact system at the library I worked at, though the words didn't flash.  I'd mess with the kids who were playing Halo by sending messages over their computers and pausing them occasionally.  Such gems as "Did you get your homework finished?" or "You're awfully chatty today.  I can hear you across the library."  Exciting stuff.

It was really handy for when you suspect someone masturbating to porno in the middle of the library (which happens far, far too often).  Shut that stuff right down.  Never did, but I always wanted to send a witty message across with that.

I'm not as big brothery as Hawkbit. If you're masturbating, it's a behavioral problem, not a computer problem. Really most 'computer' problems are like that. The only time I ever chide someone is if they're blatantly watching porn or I get a complaint. Otherwise, it's all about freedom to view imo.

We do have some nazis around here who really would like it to be a police state with monitoring and whatnot.

I was in a small, urban library that acted as a homework help center when they shut down the recreation centers here.  We were basically babysitters, so as much as the first amendment holds, all is good until I'd see a gaggle of 10 year olds watching over the shoulder of an older kid/adult who was watching some pretty stomach-churning stuff.

I wouldn't say we were big-brothery, but we were as much of a community center as we were a library.  So there was a higher standard expected of the patrons and staff, I suppose.  We tried to keep kids on track both behaviorally and with school work.  For a lot of those kids it was either go to the library, go to the streets or go home and get beaten by crackhead parents.

One of the ongoing debates when I left the system was whether or not to make an area that had private computers to keep prying eyes from a PC.  That way someone could use it for whatever and kids couldn't be subjected to porn... sounded great on paper, but in practice it just gave someone a free sex booth.

22 years old. Found her dead mother. Father's not involved. Kid screaming. Facebook has nothing to do with this, but it's a nice talking point. She was going to kill that child eventually.

Tbh, with that area of Florida, I'm shocked meth wasn't involved.

Given her picture, I'm not entirely certain it's not.  She's looking very much like the earlier stages of those "this is what meth does to you" pictures.
