Awesome.  Wonder how much HD space it needs... might be time to bite the bullet and upgrade from 20GB.   awesome, for real

After the first disk crapped out, I have been praying for this update.

I've gone through three, I think.  Apparently there's some sort of manufacturing defect that causes them to wear themselves out after a certain amount of use, and we use them a LOT.  Luckily they're pretty quick about shipping replacements, and they don't even bother asking for the old one back.

Same here. I think its because the disk is constantly read, so, hours of spinning and BLUE LAZERS!.

I could see the metal film in mine melt or shift a bit in the center, scary. Be glad to get rid of those, and all the heat.

Yeah, they're hot as fuck after a few hours of use.  The defect is supposedly a physical irregularity, though -- the center is a bit thicker than the rest of the disc and it ends up getting scratched (the defective discs usually show this as a brown ring around the center).  Someone tested this by running one of the discs through a DVD polisher and noticing that only the center got polished.

Bump.  This is out now.  Only a 19MB install, and if you were using the disc the installer apparently reads the account info that was associated with that, so you don't even have to enter a new activation code.  Just go to the PS3 store and it's a free download.

The functionality seems about the same, but the UI is a little bit sharper-looking.  It looks more like the native PS3 menu system than the old tab-based thing did, and it shows you more movies on the screen at once.

I approve.

It also loads faster. One of the better features while browsing is the triangle clip preview. However that did lock up my machine once so far.

So far my only bitch about the downloaded netflix player is that it only shows the season description for TV shows, the disc based player shows the actual episode description.  Only time it is really a big deal though is with the kids requests,  "Daddy I want to watch the backyardigans where tasha is a mermaid!" isn't as easy of a request to fulfill as it used to be.

It actually feels a little slower on application startup to me, but that could easily be my imagination.  There's certainly no reason for it to be.

I'm surprised there's no way to get to the episode descriptions... next time I load up a TV show I'm going to try pushing all the buttons to see if it's hidden away somewhere non-obvious.

Actually I noticed tonight if you go to select another episode the descriptions show up while scrolling through them, once you have actually selected an episode it just shows the season's blurb.  The only thing I can think is that this is some sort of overly sensitive attempt at spoiler prevention.

We've actually been stung by unwanted spoilers in the old interface ("oh god, it's time for a new episode, quick push play before we can read the summary!") so this sounds like a good change.  You see the episode summaries in the case you described where you're flipping through trying to find a specific one to rewatch, but when you're going through one at a time you don't.

Hallelujah.  I'm pretty sure the Netflix disc is what killed the optical drive on my PS3.

Now if they just hit the Wii I'll be set.

swamp poop  Note to self, don't trust the wife when she tells me something tech related.

She watches Netflix in the bedroom on the Wii and when I told her about the PS3 update her response was "I wish they would do that for the Wii."
