To make them... Uh.  swamp poop It's like 4am here, so I'll try to explain this and have it make more sense than the post above.  why so serious?

Basically something like this to produce them:

Code:
  ͠I
_ םם_
#Π###
Then place another piston.

Code:
  ͠I
_Πםם_
#Π###

Code:
ם = any block
͠  = redstone
I = redstone torch
Π = piston
# = "ground"

Confusing as fuck most likely, Sorry.

I think I see what he's saying. You put one piston in a one-block hole in the ground, and two of any other block in a straight line just on top of the ground next to the space above the piston. The outer of the two blocks has a redstone torch, and the inner has one dab of redstone dust applied. You then place another piston on top of the first piston, next to the two other blocks you placed first.

I have a question for the Minecraft gurus here.  If I'm at bedrock, how densely do I need to place torches to prevent monster spawns?  I've noticed that in the current version, light gets less effective the lower down you get, and I'm carving out a lot of space at bedrock level so I'd like to figure out just how many torches I'm going to need to keep creepers from spawning behind me.

That's odd, spawn tower runs down to bedrock and I didn't notice any issue with light.  I put my slider up so that may change things for me, but no monsters spawned.

It isn't clear to me if the bedrock fog changes the lighting rules for spawning, but I don't spend much time down quite that far, 13ish is the money level for diamonds.

I might just be messing up my torch placement, but isn't the usual rule that as long as there's a torch within 7 squares you're okay?

Mobs will spawn at lighting of 7 or less, and torches are a value of 14 and drop off one per square (stuff like leaves will modify how fast it drops off). Assuming that the light dropoff from the fog works like other versions of the same, it would make spawning easier, but I haven't found anyplace that knows what the value of the lighting change is.

I think that's right.  I typically go 5 for aesthetic reasons though.

I just played with pre-release 1.9 (second one).  Not reading anything about it yet, just wanted to play.

I discovered how to breed cows.  Hilarious.

Closely related question: is the dropoff computed using Manhattan distance or diagonal distance?

I don't think the bedrock fog affects light level, just player view distance.

I haven't played since shortly after installing 1.8 (mainly because I'm sure my group will end up starting a new world again). One thing I'm not clear on - did they change it so that animal spawns stay constant or something? (as in, they staty there after you log off, or leave the vacinity of the chunk) Or do you just breed animals when you need a whole bunch and then slaughter them?

Animals no longer respawn as they used to.  The ones you first get when the chunks are generated are it, so you will have to breed them to get more, if you want to kill them and still have animals around.

That's actually really cool. I was dissapointed when I built my underground cave farm, with it's nice pasture, only to discover that it randomly morphed what animals were there every time I logged in.

It's kind of sad that prior to playing Minecraft, I would have laughed at that screenshot and proclaimed that it look like a three year old drew it in paint.

Waaait... so in 1.9, animals don't respawn, and you have to feed them manually to get more?  Or will they also breed on their own (more slowly) if left to their own devices?

I don't think they will breed on their own. They actually already don't respawn (or despawn) in 1.8 - once you kill one, it is gone for good.

Are you sure about that? Seems like I have more animals in my village than I started with.

I am pretty sure they're not despawning, because one is shorn  why so serious?

My guess is that either you or someone else is exploring, and the animals appear when new chunks open.  Wait a while and see if they don't end up elsewhere.

I have not seen any animals around Crankytown for a while.  I haven't killed any intentionally, either.  Going vegan this round.

If someone is exploring in my single player game....

They also can't get out because I built a giant wall around the village, then got bored and left before I built the castle.

Well, I just tried to download Minecraft 1.8 because I screwed up last time I changed to 1.9 (and overwrote 1.8 without a backup).

1.9.2 is what's on www.minecraft.net

So you're all behind!

Is there an option to download old versions on minecraft.net, anyone know off the top of their head?

Wait this isn't right.  I screwed stuff up and now I have to figure out how to put it all back, while enjoying my Friday evening ale.

Edit:  I can't even blame this on my ale, since I have just taken the first sip.  It's all working again.

Lots of fun new stuff in 1.9.2pre2.  I'm doing some single-player stuff in a more exploring than building way -- digging the occasional bedroom into the side of a hill with bed, chest, crafttable and furnace, and then picking up and moving to a new location after a couple day/night cycles.

Does anybody know if the nether is supposed to finally work in multiplayer in 1.9?
