Since people were talking about the addictive fun of digging out quarries, I asked my co-worker to send me a shot of his current quarry on our server.

This pit is currently about 45 x 45 x 60 blocks (121,500). He has another area he dug out to only about five high, but far enough in each direction that you can't see the walls - with lighting placed just as methodically. He's just a touch OCD.

My quarry looks little compared to that.  (Mine is 20x20, and I've just started to hit some gold and lapis lazuli).

That glowstone looks neat.  I should get some of that.

Speaking of massive structures - have you seen Bzalthek's castle?  Wowzers.

I made a 50x50 quarry all the way down to bedrock. It was both an achievement and a colossal waste of time.

I got back into this after my maps got corrupted/lost recently.

So I just dug basically an elevator shaft straight down this time, instead of traipsing through the dungeons with entrances on the surface. And for the first time ever playing, I found some diamonds (5 of them). Should I use them now and build a diamond pick and shovel, or is the famed durability of them not that big of a deal?

Diamond pick is worth making, if only to leave sitting in a chest somewhere to use for mining obsidian later. A diamond shovel would be a tremendous waste, on the other hand.

Just use em.  You'll find plenty if you spend time deep down, the durability is nice, and you also mine/dig faster.

I am the weird one who prefers to use a diamond shovel.  It lasts a really really really long time and only uses one diamond.  Totally worth it, for me.

If you die a lot, that calculation might change.

We have no idea, since every single scrap of gold on our server goes towards making powered rails.  why so serious?

No, gold is the fastest but shortest lasting tool with 33 uses. Stone is mined at 0.2 secs with the gold pick-ax and 0.3 with the diamond, I think.

Are those glass half (or quarter) blocks? Or a glass counter item?

Reads like glass blocks got chanted in 1.8, they are now set in the center of blocks and are much more thin. I like it.

According to the wiki they'll be a separate recipe. Glass blocks will remain glass blocks.

Gold tools were rebalanced in 1.3 or something to be the fastest but have the least uses. AFAIK they used to be identical wood tools.

The spade used to be the diamond equivalent, some DBZ reference or something. Guess no longer!

Link didn't work, is that the LotR thing? I found it more sad and depressing than anything else. I really don't know why people would devote so much time to such a homage.
