So, it's completely black because the map is inside a cave?

Got a new map updated. Now with Cave Mode!

Odd question, how are you using a custom image in google maps? Can you point me to where I can learn about this?

Nothing so fancy, I'm just using the Minecraft-Overviewer project at https://github.com/brownan/Minecraft-Overviewer .

This particular map is pretty monsterous though. The combined data for all three maps is around 8GB and takes about 2 hours to generate on a 16 cpu xeon box. Most of that is due to heavy .png compression to keep the size down, though. If you have a fast machine, generating it with jpeg tiles is quite a bit faster.

Apparently doesn't work in whatever IE setup I have at work. Works fine in FF.

I was wondering around looking at some old projects and found a huge stash of stuff with like 4-5 large boxes filled with stone, is anyone still laying claim to that?  There we some signs up, I think it said something like amd/drag/def.  I know not many people are playing any more, but I won't take anything if people want it stored there.

Trickling information about the Adventure Update

Since 1.8 is still a significant time away, we’re going to have to stop being as secretive about it as we have. We’ll provide information about it as we go, but we’ll keep actual details secret. So, for example, we could say “added two new colors” without saying which ones, or “testing experience and leveling to see if it’s fun” without giving details on exactly how it works.

The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.

Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.

After the Adventure Update, you will be able to play Minecraft in different game modes. Creative mode features limited flying.

1.7 will include pistons, shears, redstone->repeater fix and fences on fences. It will not include the new lighting

I am really looking forward to pistons, though no actual useful applications are coming to mind yet other than water gates for fast harvesting of grain.  But it'll be nice to have something new to experiment with.

You can use them as Light switches. Torch in a hole, piston moves cover on and off.

Do they move dropped items too? You could use them to elevator items UP to an easily collectible point.

I believe they lift/push items, yeah.  But an item elevator would be a lot of up->side->up->side->up->side movement, wouldn't it?

Light switches will be cool.  Oh, lava-dumping traps, that will be nice too.  Keep the mad bombers out of the castle.  YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

Five Pistons on top of each other in a five deep hole. Press one button and it extends five blocks up. That's the theory anyways.

First 1.8 teaser screenshot, featuring an NPC village

Notch says he is adding in a giant mushrooms biome, but they won't appear in normal forested areas the way they do here.

Pistons + Circuitry = some impressive little machines - this is worth looking at for the big finale: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc6spHvGPtQ

Is there an easy way to farm slimeballs? I've literally never seen a slime in game (granted I haven't been playing much lately) but I'd like to play with the sticky pistons.

Dig the deepest, openest, flattest cave you can imagine, then double it.

Slimes will show up. Arrow them until only balls remain. Punching, or using shitty wooden tools will also get them to split and drop balls.

Also note that slimes only spawn in some chunks. If you are unlucky with the positioning, you won't get any spawns. If that happens, just keep enlarging the cave.

So am I the only one who thinks this game is being eclipsed by it's clones/competitors? Hey here's some shit a community of twelve neckbeards on Youtube will use to make a working adding machine the size of San Francisco. A normal person will use it to build traps, realize that the five or six torches outside his door already make him invincible, and sign out.

Minecraft is popular because you build shit, not because its a challenging adventure game.

I would argue it's being eclipsed by it's own modding community more then anything.

Its kind of interesting really.  Because Minecraft started being sold so early in development you have this kind of community development feel.  Normally all these mods would be fine and dandy, but since we know Notch is still making the game, all these other features seem like they *should* be added.  I'm not sure if gaming has seen a development process quite like this, or on this scale, before.

To be fair, he is also pulling from the community of mods to add to the game. It was a modder that came up with the pistons.
