Okay... I just had one of the most profoundly disturbing experiences in a video game I've ever had.

I didn't read up on how portals function before I started tinkering with them.  I made a portal, walked around in the Nether and walked out the portal I first entered from, assuming that I'd come out at the portal I created.  It doesn't work that way, I quickly figured out.  So after I dug myself out from the inside of a mountain, the first thing I see is a small castle-like structure.  Only I don't remember ever building it.  It has all my trademark designs, but I literally don't ever remember building it.

So now I'm sitting here, wondering how and when I did that.

It ported you to the future where you had already built it.

Meth is a helluva drug.

Portal thing is a bug, btw.  Currently the game has a make-a-portal default for the other side if one doesn't exist.  With the distance crunching 1:16, when leaving the Nether, it looks only at the center location of the expanded overworld, and thus doesn't see the portal you created in the expanded chunk, so it makes another portal in the center of the overworld chunk.

I still haven't made a portal since the update. But otherwise, I'd say it's largely a fun tweak rather than a major change to gameplay:  I've barely noticed the difference in deep spawning.

Am I being particularly dim or does the website not say how much it costs? (or do I actually have to start the transaction process to see it?)

Spawn is a good ways to complete.  I've built an eastern road up the cliff from spawn, and I'm building a western tunnel that will pop up to the surface at land masses.  I'm going to eventually connect this tunnel to the continent I plan on destroying!

My southern tunnel now connects with your western tunnel at the foot of the stairs.  It currently ends at the island where I dug my pit to hell, but I'll probably extend it further (unless somebody beats me to it.

Beware that the portion of the tunnel that connects with yours is *right* below sea level.  Do not knock blocks out of the ceiling unless you're ready to replace them quickly....

There seems to be an (intermittent?) issue with furnaces destroying items you put in them.

A workaround, as strange as it seems, is to not build the furnace next to any crafted block. This has worked consistently for me.

Good to know, I'm going to need a lot of stone and glass for my upcoming project, so I'll have to make large furnace banks.

I second this.. there was an issue reported on the MC forums about this.

Furnaces will act funny (I've found) if they are not 'faced' properly.
(Ie, sometimes, you'll place them, and not be able to see where the flames are -
you're looking at the back / side of it.  Make sure that the front is not facing against a wall or other block.)

I placed my furnace last night, and I didn't even have problems with the materials disappearing / no progress issues that others were talking about.  Although, the arrow indicator was still not functioning properly.

I'm not entirely sure where I dropped anchor last night...  Depending on how we choose to orient the map.  From spawn, facing the direction the Sun / Moon rises I'm off quite a ways to what would be the North-East-ish (If Sun rise is East) and I do mean 'out-a-way'
I wandered for quite a while indeed.  Once I get my bearings I'll begin road construction back towards spawn.

How are we marking out space in the new world order? I've been using blocks with torches on top of them to mark out my foundations.

I am planning on using unannounced landmarks at first, then quietly erecting a haphazard wall of cobblestone, followed by a moat filled with lava.

I started my castle yesterday about two landmasses directly north from spawn.

I appear to be on a very very large island in the middle of a rather large body of water NE' of spawn (as described above)
I've ringed the shore in torches in case you happen to find it, but I doubt most people will simply stumble upon it, it is very far out there
from what I can tell.

Hopefully we'll get some map.png posted soon while the map is smaller so we can all get our bearings better.

Have we decided on a cardinal direction yet?

Edit:  Also, I love to explore, as I did with most the old map.. if you all get a chance, make a sign and let us know who built stuff..

Mine are marked -=SoK=-  ..  Enjoy!

When you /home, you're facing west, at least according to the large "---> N" created just past the F13 in the water ...

EDIT: I am due west of the spawn, go until you hit a wood block with a torch on it and look up to your left, there's my mountain. Guess I should start working on the western tunnel that Bzalthek started ...
