Lit grass seems to spawn them just fine in my SP lair.

This. I did this by tiling my path down into my mine/cave with dirt and lit it up. After a day or two I had a huge chunk of my cave covered in grass and subsequently animals.

Lit grass anywhere, over or underground seems to attract animals. I cannot keep pigs and sheep off my football field, no matter how many I eat.

Clearing a huge complicated cave system is definitely compelling gameplay. When you break into an area with darkness on either side of you, and lots of open ledges to areas up above on both sides, clearing takes lots of puzzle-solving--planting blocks for cover is more important than weapons.  I dunno why Notch thinks the monsters aren't already dangerous/challenging, at least in this setting.

I need to think about a big building project next.

Hopefully not for a few years, I'd like to actually pass my classes and not lose my current job for the time being.

I've had evil thoughts of making some kind of 'Starflight' mod for this game.  Anyone else get that vibe?
Replace the horror-esque mobs with roaming reptilians and multi-teeted slime cows, throw in some endurium, random ruins, and maybe mod in an ATV that requires fuel.  And and and... ok lemme stop.

I was debating weather or not to share this with you guys but... The other night, my wife had to wake me out of a terrible nightmare. She said I was going on and on about how it was going to be dark soon and if everything wasn't in it's right place we were going to get hurt. That's right, a grown-ass man having a Minecraft nightmare.

400k in sales. That's pretty good for an alpha.

Fuck devs who talk about how no one wants sandboxes or must have superhuge budgets to make them. Seriously, fuck off and go into another business if you think the only thing that could possibly sell is some Zynga-sucking ripoff or some horrible little on-raills shooter thing. And yeah, you otherwise good-minded, smart people who've tried to make "builder" environments need to take a hard look at Minecraft and think hard about why you failed. Here's one hint: compare making shit in Second Life with making shit in Minecraft. Sometimes you have to dial it back to the basics in order to make progress, not try to build sand castles on top of already shaky foundations.

I find my playtime in this game interesting, in that I play only when struck upon some great new creative force.  I went a week without playing at all, then BAM - I got an idea and have been playing for the past four hours; likely 20 more this week to finish it.

I saw that the most recent Gamestop mag had a page on Minecraft.

I wish there were more height available to us. 64 isn't a lot.

And I wish there was the possibility of going up in the mountains to get snow, and that it replenished.

Looks like the map size is now blowing up Catograph. I'll keep trying to see if maybe it was something with my laptop, if not, I'll grab another program.

I pulled a save from the 16th down yesterday and was able to use Cartograph ... it sure did take awhile though. And claimed to be non-responsive while it was processing. I just let it go and eventually it worked. I use more standard settings though (what do you use to get it to turn out the way you do?).

The freezing is very typical of Cartograph. I use oblique-angled to get our map, which puts more strain on the program.

I saw that yesterday and figured I'd make that my next project (or modify it so mount dong could also shoot pigs etc).

I wonder how far that pig/sheep went, and if you could kill people by hitting them with said flying animal... Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

That is just monstrously awesome... Next we need a cannon that uses explosives as the projectile so people can have artillery battles.

Love this game, not so much for itself, but for the idea that it's making other game designers do a double-take.

I have no words fit to describe the awesomeness of the animal cannon.

On the non-awesome front, apparently some assholes were DDoS'ing the Minecraft server yesterday.
