I actually enjoyed this mostly. It was predictable in all the right ways. Characterization was dreadfully thin, and they could have been more creative with the magic. The mop and broom sequence was perfect imo. I thought they were going to do something like "How's your apprentice doing?" Nic Cage opens the door, glances at him wrestling with a broom, "Still working on it harharhar." But no, they went nuts with it.
Oh, and I could have done without the opening sequence, "This is the wizards in their heyday, aren't they awesome (not really)." Totally unnecessary exposition that was explained later through regular storytelling.

I too enjoyed this flick, but let's be honest. Most of us in this forum if given a wad of money would've come up with a WAY better interpretation of the theme of this movie. I mean, it's fantasy druidic magic. Do you know where you could actually GO with this trope? To me, the movie was too simple and bland... sophomoric even. Rental quality really. This is from the top down, from the theme, to the characters, to the specific use of the magics themselves... all overtly simple and bland.

A perfect description for a majority of the people they were hoping to sell tickets to.

Kids these days would be bored, which is why something like Avatar will do better at the box office. This film basically needed Avatar's complexity and use of magic.

It looked like a 90-minute version of Wizards of Waverly Place, which is what they seemed to be going for. I guess my question is, why would someone go to this movie expecting Avatar-level complexity?

I'd still like to see this one, but let's hope Season of the Witch is better.

Avatar was complex? Compared to SA? Heck yah. It looked like a 90-minute version of Wizards of Waverly Place, which is what they seemed to be going for. I guess my question is, why would someone go to this movie expecting Avatar-level complexity?
You answered your own question in your statement. That didn't make any fucking sense. Awesome! He stated it was a 90-min version of WoWP. Then he asked why someone would go to this movie expecting/wanting something else.

There is so much ridiculous, "I'm going to be a cool nerd and shit on everything." on this board. The movie was fun, end of story. Fuck all the haters.

So all our posts must now devolve into a simple "thumbs up/down" assessment or risk persecution? No one's hating, but dont be a fool and think a good romp or fun movie means the movie wasnt lacking. This was a fun movie, yes, but given the premise of Merlinian magic it was very short and lightweight. So why care?? Because the way Hollywood works, there will be no similar script for a very long time. So when one person writes a fun yet sophomoric flick, good luck finding a true masterpiece later on down the road - it wont make the cut and you're left with wasted potential, especially with narrow themes such as this (urban mages).

Saw this last night and thought it wasn't bad. The "mirror trick" was the only piece of really cool magic in there, though. Maybe they'll get a little bolder in the inevitable sequel (Sorcerer's Apprentice II: Return of the Hat).

This movie veered wildly between boring tripe I wish I could have fast forwarded through (pretty much any scene that involved the wildly unbelievable and shitty romance sub-plot) to mostly tolerable. Although the end blew any goodwill I might have harbored towards the movie, what with Rental.

I'm sorry, but I thought this movie was awesome. I like more serious fantasy stories, but this is Disney.. I don't expect Tale of the Malazan or some shit. edit: Also, this coupled with Season of the Witch kind of surprises me how well Nic Cage has found a niche in fantasy. It suits him somehow.

His particular diet of scenery is best consumed outside of depictions of reality.

I'm in touch with my inner Disney child, I think. I don't know what to say.. I'm a sucker for light hearted fantasy stuff like this. It's fun. Maybe the best/respectable thing about it is Alfred Molina, I guess. Speaking of which, same goes for Prince of Persia.

Flying metal eagle. Hot English girl. Magic the Gathering homage. Car chase with wizards. Silly Broom sequence underscored by Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice. And the thousands -- hopefully millions -- who were excpecting something dark and angsty and gritty and complex, giving me endless evenings of delicious schadenfreude.

And of course by English I meant Australian, which makes her ten times as hot, but also qualifies me for severe beatings by our Australian members here.
