Now, I can't say I'm a fan a tennis but other members of my family are so the sport is on my radar.  Lost on a day when both England and the U.S. advance in the World Cup is the longest tennis match in the history of the sport.  The match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut stands at over 10 hours long...  and counting as the match has been suspended for the second day.

The previous record for longest match was 6 hours and 33 minutes.  Just the fifth set alone breaks the record for longest match at 7 hours and 6 minutes (so far).  The score in the fifth set is a ridiculous 59-59.  The previous Wimbledon record was 20-18.  This is going to be one of those records that never gets broken.

Over and out.

The guy is 9 hours into a match and still hits 90mph+ aces, that's fucking crazy

Holy balls.

59-59, almost 200 aces between them.....

INSANITY.

90+?  Isner hits routinely hits between 115 and 130+.  If he was down to 90 it was a weak second serve or he was a little tired after 10 hours of play.  There have nearly been 200 aces in this match.  98 alone by Isner (a record).

This is absolutely insane.  This is 10 hours plus from guys that play fast.  Big servers like this barely break 4 hours in a 5 set match.  In terms of games, the last set alone is nearly 2 5 set matches worth.  I almost weep for the guy that wins, because he's likely to be absolutely dead for his next match, which may have almost no rest due to scheduling (well, tomorrow's match resumption could end in 2 games at least).

People that started on Sunday are into round 3.  This is still a first round match.

It's been crazy all over this Wimbledon.  Roger Federer nearly lost his first match and would have if the guy he was playing didn't choke.  He was down 2 sets and getting his ass kicked in the third. He took 4 sets in his next match against a qualifier.  This is the guy that's won 6 of the last 7 Wimbledon titles.  James Blake got in a shouting match with a commentator during his match.  Pam Shriver was bad mouthing his sulky attitude within earshot of him. "I can hear you." And off it went from there.. she'll be lucky if she isn't fired when the tournament completes.

Sucks that this is the same time as the World Cup.  This is my favorite tennis event of the year.

At first I thought this was really neat.  Then I realized that it was an artifact of an outdated scoring system.

Remember this day.  I bet it may prompt a change to a tie-break system in the future.

This is Wimbeldon. They still don't let people play unless they are wearing only white.

The only major with last set tie breaks is the US Open.

There will be no rush to change anything because this shit just doesn't happen.  The only thing I can think would be some sort of fail safe. "OK at 50 all we roshambo for the win".

5-1 it's over in the first ten minutes on restart, now that they are fresh.

Christ, at what point do you start serving underhand?

70-68 Isner.  They managed to pass the 11 hour mark before finally ending the match.  I think they may have actually surpassed the entire Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.  The extended version.   swamp poop

112 aces for Isner and Mahut only had 3 break chances.  That is some amazing serving.

edit:
Fun stat - only 10 WTA players had entered Wimbledon with 100+ aces for the entire year so far.
