Yea, Eldrazi is the best looking set they've made since the old days.

Too bad it's a totally wack set, though I could see it being a little fun for drafting.

Kozilek isn't going to do you much good in that pull, but I guess it is worth keeping it out of someone else's hands.

In the first pack, you passed a couple of snake umbras and a couple of kozilek's predator.
- Predator is a Hill Giant that gives you mana excel or chump blockers.  He's reasonable even if you aren't powering out an Eldrazi.
- Umbras in general are solid.  Snake Umbra is a card advantage engine that protects and pumps a critter at a good cost.

Green in general gives you many more options and works well as a second color to black, and would make a third color splash much easier with it's mana fixing.

Actually, i used it to win 2 games :)  One of which my i had just cast it, then my opponent cast a 9/9 fatty, so on my turn i grabbed it with Traitorous Instinct, cast a distortion strike on mine, and attacked with both; he had to sacrifice 7 permanents, couldnt block either, and took 22 damage.

Plus i do tend to grab high value cards to try and keep myself in draft packs.  I'm sure not playing any competetive constructed...

I guess 10 mana is just on the edge of playable with no mana acceleration in this environment (or did I miss some on the way through your pull?) Still seems likely to clutter your hand up more often than not.

The most common way is by casting spells that create Eldrazi Spawn tokens, which are 0/1 critters with a "sac to add 1 mana to your pool" ability.  I had in fact cast my Essence Feed spell (3 dam to player, 3 life to you, create 3 tokens) both times so it allowed me to spend 10 mana with 7 lands. Some of the people i face had multiple spells for creating such tokens which they either tried to parlay into their own fatty, or token rush with some sort of pump spell.  I think every color has some spells which make em.   A bunch of people are trying to get these excessive fattys in play in standard by either abusing tokens, or some sort of polymorph deck (re-animator wont work on the biggest ones b/c they dont stay in the graveyard)

Also, the draw 4 cards effect on him is just sick on top of the 12/12 body with feldon's crane built it.  The whole annihilator mechanic I'm not fond of as it seems unnecessary but i guess it fits the theme of this set.

Yeah I managed to totally miss Essence Feed on my way through the list - that's why I was confused. I thought you were playing it with nothing but lands.

Did another RoE draft last night and again went 2-1 with a RU deck.  Nothing real great and I didnt feel good after the draft, but this card was clearly my MVP

With some walls, hill giant types and eldrazi tokens suddenly becoming 4/4's, it won the game for me any time I was able to cast it.
I think the highest number of hellions i ended up with was 8. :)

Lost one match to a good GW deck; beat him game 1, but games 2 and 3 he was smoking me out of the gate with just 3 land.  Played first, dropped this guy turn 2, pump him to 4/4 on turn 3, add a Hyena Umbra to make him 5/5 first strke and hit him with a Prey's Vengence to make him 7/7.  I had taken 11 damage by the time my first critter hit.  Ugh.

Yet another RoE draft last night and went 3-0 with a RG  deck.  I got passed a ton of red burn and removal spells.

I had 2 Staggershocks, 3! Flame Slashes, 2 Forked Bolts, a Wrap in Flames, and a Spawning Breath.  I managed to outright kill some 8/8 or 10/9 fattys with burn alone.
Generally just removed anything in my way and attacked with Fireboars, Ondu Giants, Siege Runners, Battle Rattle Shaman, and my couple of fatties.  I actually managed to grab the green Beastbreaker this time around.  Other notables were.

Sadly, never got to take advanatge of the Broodwarden with my ton of spawn tokens from Skittering invasion and other cards, or Gigantormancer.  Never even saw the later in 7 games.
More free drafting for me. :)

Once more into the breach; i actually dont care how the games play out as my first pack first pick was a lovely planeswalker.

and it looks like i can trade him for 28-29 tix immediately.  That'll pay for 2 drafts by itself even if I go 0-3.  Nice.

Drafted a Bw deck trying to get Gideon or Pestilence Demon into play.  We'll see.

Edit: managed to go 2-1 again, and true to form never got to use either of the above cards.  My best games involved getting an early Training Grounds out with a bunch of cheap levelers

How long do these draft + 3 game tournaments take?

Varys, but i would say 2-3.5 hours depending on how quickly everyone plays.  Most of mine we right in the 2 hrs 30 mins timeframe.

All tournaments take about an hour per round.

So Draft : 3 hours
daily swiss sealed/constructed : 4 hours
Prem Draft : 6 hours
Prem event+top 8 : Anything up to 10 hours.

From my work email thread:

Drafted Eldrazi tonight at Pat's Games. (what an amazing venue btw - in Austin - apparently one of the top 5 retailers for Magic in America - the embodiment of Your Mom's Basement, so basically Magic Heaven.

First pack, pulled a Sarkan. Second guy passed a World at War.

Guess I was playing black/red.

Committed from that point forward, I proceeded to pound through the first round with Rapacious Ones and World at War. The second round I got THRASHED by some guy with some horrible 6/6 Lord that levels up for 2 mana or something and does 6 damage to everything when it attacks. Third round was fairly amazing, also, I got Sarkan out by turn 5 in two of the games (and proceeded to destroy the opponent). Good times.
