Icelandic volcano spews ash over northern europe, flights cancelled etc. Originally I thought this was just an unfortunate natural event sending a dust cloud in the general direction of Northern Europe... ...until I saw the pic below, which demonstrates this that Iceland have clearly built some kind of very focussed VOLCANIC-ASH-BEAM-WEAPON which they have aimed specifically at Scotland.

I actually am on the phone right now trying to find out if my flight to Greece is canceled. Leaves tonight but doesn't actually arrive in Frankfurt until tomorrow and Frankfurt airport is closed until at least 1800 GMT today.

Was this volcano big enough to affect the weather? I remember how crappy the summer after Mount Pinatubo went up was.

Shockingly, the weather has been quite good in London for the past few days. Do relax though, usually the weather is infinitely shittier.

Yay global cooling and nice sunsets. It was already fucking hot in spring, so I'll be glad to lose a degree or two for summer. Thank you for your awesome volcano, Iceland.

I was kind of hoping we'd actually see a nice summer for once since the last 4 or 5 have been shitty. Fuck you Iceland.

It's official, my trip to Greece is canceled. Now I have to see if I can get my money back from the Greek Airline and island hotels I booked.

From the bottom of the article eldaec linked: Volcanologist Thor Thordarsson said if the volcano maintained its current phase of activity, then the eruption could be over in "a few hours or even a few days" meaning the atmosphere would clear shortly afterwards.
But he added: "If the eruption has a phase change and starts to produce lava... then we might be in for a much longer haul, an eruption that might last for months or even years, with a quiet period in between intermittent explosions." Also, turns out that Eyjafjallajökull (the errupting volcano) has a larger neighbour called Katla which tends to get irritable around the same time. Something like three out of the four last times that Eyjafjallajökull has had an erruption, Katla has followed not long after. Or so the newspapers in Norway claim anyway, and I believe all I read in newspapers.

What do you expect from a country whose main export was a girl with this last name: Guðmundsdóttir Iceland is pretty, scenery-wise but holy shit on a stone that language is insane. Fucking vikings were hardcore in everything.

Radio Massacre International are over here for a couple of gigs, and while they are over they are recording sessions of their highly improvisational music for some local radio shows. Last night they played a couple of pieces for The Gagliarchives, which they titled "We Might Be Stuck Here Because Of The Ash" and "No We REALLY Might Be Stuck Here Because Of The Ash".

Volcanologist Thor Thordarsson. I get the feeling the man picked his career path just to get that title to compliment his kick ass name.

I didn't exactly meet Magnus, but I saw him once. He was the special guest MC at a World's Strongest Man thing held at the Renaissance festival. It was him and some dude in a poofy hat and tights on microphones while a bunch of enormous dudes performed medievaly feats of strength, like pulling a wooden wagon full of logs around instead of a car. His barely-veiled contempt for the fruitloop in tights next to him was the icing on the cake.
Nobody I was with seemed to realize how awesome it all was.

Or so the newspapers in Norway claim anyway, and I believe all I read in newspapers. If Katla goes, you can pretty much write off Europe for a few weeks. The papers had a nice seismic image this past week of a giant pool of magma from a slightly different vent just under Katla. Should be fun times. I'm hoping the winds don't shift; Reykjavik has been totally clear of fallout from the eruption over the past few days.

What could go wrong? Mostly, I think they're worried about wear-and-tear on the engines (it's dirty shit to be sucking in) and, of course, the visibility problems make emergency landings more dicey than normal. You COULD fly in it, it's just take-offs and landings are going to fucking suck and be far more dangerous, and your engines are going to be fouled and break down a lot more.
