I showed this to people last week who were mostly drunk and half of them are still quoting it. Some can't even remember what was going on at the time but the sheer aweseomness of the quotes and movies engrained themselves in their heads. Of course I'm not sure if it qualifies as an OLD movie but it is a fantastic performace from Richard E. Grant. Never mix your drinks.
Ways more recent (not OLD but I'll stick it in because this is becoming movies that aren't out now that people might not have seen) [ur=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0147612/l]Happiness[/url] is a really affecting film. It's a black comedy that really has an impact and I think is worth watching.

I loved that film and Richard E. Grant was wonderful. He's done so much awesome acting. Of course, he was also in Spice World. But then, who wasn't? Why did they do that?? It's like everyone I love died in the same stupid accident or something. Geez, how long ago was that? I'm still not over it.

Interesting factoid about Richard E Grant and Withnail and I - Richard E Grant is allergic to alcohol, and was completely sober during the entire film. Which essentially makes him A: better at acting and B: better at being drunk than everyone else, ever. I type this with a bottle and a half of Chardonnay in me. Hooray!

Mel Brooks needs to be in this list somewhere, so I'll just mention History of the World Pt 1 and Blazing Saddles.
Apologies if I missed their mentioning, I've only been skimming this thread.

I knew he was teetotal but the story I'd heard was the during filming the director insisted he see what it's actually like to be drunk and forced him to drink the best part of a bottle of vodka, which is the only time he's ever actually drunk alcohol. Also the lighter fluid was apparently filled with vinegar rather than water and they chose not to tell him. The fact that he's able to actually keep talking after that is pretty damn impressive.

Replace History of the World with either Young Frankenstein or Spaceballs. Blazing Saddles is an amazing comedy, though.

Don't forget The Producers, though. It had one of my favourite Mel Brooks endings in it. Springtime for Hitler. It's even making me laugh now! How can you NOT laugh at dancing Nazi Stormtroopers?

Spaceballs was weak too, the trifecta is Producers/Blazing Saddles/Young Frankenstein.

I've never been a big fan of Mel Brooks. His great moments are great, but there's so much unfunny crap padding even his best stuff. Generally his timing sucks: jokes outlive their welcome, or the setup isn't worth the punchline. I would have liked to see him write (and cast) more movies... but then let somebody else direct and edit them.
On the other hand, it took Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker years to run out of steam... and their earlier stuff is spectacular: Kentucky Fried Movie, Airplane, Top Secret.

Personally, I loved History. It is my favorite Brooks film along with Blazing Saddles. Though, I'm good with whatever Brooks' films are put in this thread, as long as we all agree on one thing: Mel Brooks = pure win

John Landis was much the same. Amazon Women on the Moon had flashes of brilliance although it was spotty overall.

It's surprising how old movies don't always hold up. I just watched Wrath of Kahn. I remember how everyone was in love with this movie when it came out. It shows up as 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, no less. But man, does it suck. Forget the cheesy graphics and bad hairdos. What kills it is the ham acting, the boring story, and the awesome illogic of the plot. And man are they old. Kirk has started his descent into self-parody, Spock and McCoy look grizzled, and Scotty's face is stretched into a rictus of immobility. It's hard to believe they did another five movies after this one. The one upside was getting to see Kirstey Alley from before she turned into a tabloid nightmare.

To me Mel Brooks is very very hot or very very cold and nothing in between. I think Young Frankenstein is one of the best comedies ever made, possibly the best. I couldn't be paid to watch Spaceballs.
Put me down for Silver Streak on the Gene Wilder front. Then I can't think of anything with Gene Wilder that I don't love. I wonder sometimes how much the malevolence and sarcasm of his Wonka warped me as a child.
I'll second the recommendation for the Thin Man series. "Another" is kind of weak, too much kid and dog, but the series starts heading back up after that. Good acting. Great characters. Amusing plots. Great chemistry between Powell and Loy. The sheer number of cocktails consumed is a wonderfully amusing bit that's so in opposition to our current culture, but don't try to keep up.
For an old movie that I'm surprised more people don't know about, They Were Expendable is one of my favorites. I didn't watch this for a long time because it had John Wayne in it, but it's definitely not a John Wayne movie.
I think of Zulu and Man Who Would Be King as classic gamer movies. The other one that my wargaming friends indoctrinated me into was the so far unmentioned Kelly's Heroes.

It would be ok if you had just picked on Kirk suddenly having the greatest tactical epiphany of all time - there are three dimensions in space! But to think the whole movie sucks is just plain wrong.

It wasn't that Kirk realized they were in three dimensions, it was that Spock analyzed that Kahn was thinking in two dimensions, so Kirk was able to take advantage.

So Kahn was a tank and Kirk was a mech? Question is, was the Enterprise made of a lightsaber-resistant material?
You know Khan's ship had the finest corinthian leather captain's chair.

Seriously, have you guys seen this movie recently, or are you channeling your memories from a couple of decades back? Because I remembered it as absolutely awesome, and couldn't believe how bad it is when viewed in 2010. Cheesy. Corny. Overacted. Ricardo Montalban's gaping shirt with his saggy tit hanging out. Gaah. At best it's good in the way Rocky Horror is good. But not as a straight-up movie.
Compare it to the new Star Trek movie and they are worlds apart. Compare it to Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back which really have stood up well over time.

I would compare that some of the ham acting in Star Wars rivals anything in Kahn. People love them anyways and I can think of many worse movies that I would rather not watch than either of those.
