Is this the thread where I can recommend The Ice Pirates?  I think I have before.  But you should really watch it.

I just want to second Ice Pirates. I love that movie. It's so bad but yet so good.

Seriously one of my favorite movies.

Really?  Geez, I thought that film was SO awful.  Maybe I was in a bad mood or something.

I'll second Excalibur.  I'll toss-in Starchaser: The Legend of Orin for shlocky 80's Sci-Fi.  I remember being amazed that a cartoon allowed swearing. I'd never heard of Heavy Metal at the time.

Aahh omg. I'm watching this on YouTube right now (part 1 of 11). I remember bits of this from being a kid - now - I'm seeing how much recent hollywood/TV has wholesale ripped from it - from Avatar flora behaviour to the damn shape of Firefly-class Serenity! To be honest it's kind of a big old animated Star Wars rip-off anyway, but still!

Probably both too mainstream for this thread, but Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins and The Last Starfighter are both bad/good.

Edit: Oh shit, how could I forget The Man Who Would Be King? Probably my favourite movie of all time.

I'm amazed that nobody mentioned Nemesis, one of my all-time favorite cyberpunk movies. Unfortunately, the trailer does not do it justice.

EDIT: Incidentally, directed by the same guy who did The Sword and the Sorcerer and Dollman, and a shitton of other schlocky movies that might end up in this thread.

Full Moon Entertainment is chock full of cheesy goodness. A buddy of mine and I would just rent any movie that got released by them.

Ok, this film's barely old enough to drink so I'm not sure it belongs here, but it's got Rutger Hauer and Ian Dury in it  awesome, for real

Just throwing out my love of Ice Pirates.  Hardware, Excalibur, and Star Chaser all good additions too.

And eunuchs!

Hell I vote for any 80s movie with Dabney Coleman in it. Cloak and Dagger was one of my childhood favs.

I'm not a HUGE science fiction fan like a lot of you are but I did really like A Boy and His Dog.  Strangely, It might have been Don Johnson's best film!  He seemed to get worse as he aged.  I hear Harlan Ellison is planning a remake, too.  (of the film, not Don Johnson, luckily)  I don't remember where I heard that.  It might have been here.

I see you're 80's animated goodness, and raise you the 1984 Michael Crichton written and directed Runaway starring Tom Selleck and Gene Simmons with a small appearance of Kristie Alley before she became famous for being fat.

That was the movie with killer Spider Bots.  Nice.  Gene Simmons was also the bad guy, apparently.

I remembered The Wraith today, which apparently had Charlie Sheen as the protagonist, a good guy killed by a drag racing gang.  I just remember it for the awesome car.

The Night of the Hunter (1955) is right up there with The Silence of the Lambs, as far as thrillers go.

I'll second The Man Who Would Be King, Zulu, & Time Bandits. Great flicks.

Zulu has one of those iconic scenes that has been imitated like 30,000 times since then - worth watching just for that.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

I thought it was released earlier in the 80's, but it was only 1988. Oh well, it's still been 23 years since it was released and it's awesome.

I keep trying to get my kids to watch Baron. One's too young to appreciate it and the other's too old and in the early stages of teen-angst to find it cool.  Makes me sad.

I figured we wouldn't have to recommend Time Bandits to a group of geeks.  However, if we're going that route then don't miss Brazil.

Also, the wife recommends Rock and Rule  More Nelvana swearing and animation.  There's also Flight of Dragons and The Last Unicorn.

Bubba Ho-Tep.  Yes, I'm THAT much of a Bruce Campbell fan.   Heart Heart Heart

Edited because calling him Bubby might have been too familiar.

I think Hughes is in a class by himself, but it is an old movie now.

No mention of Heavy Metal yet?  Loved that movie.  Would be great idea to check out the south park tribute to it too heh.

Yellowbeard is just too damn funny to pass up.  Course anything by the Python is pretty damn good but this one never gets any love.  Can watch the whole movie free from that link to hulu  DRILLING AND MANLINESS

I want to include The Eagle has Landed. I also wanted to put in the Man Who Would be King but Baldrake and Fatuous both posted that one. Finally Bubb Ho-Tep, while an awesome film (Campbell, squee Heart) is most certainly not an old film.

Withnail & I

Original Cannon Films UK Trailer

Brief synopsis: London, 1969. Two upper-class twits decide, for a slew of ill-advised reasons, to go to the 'country'. Its basically Fear and Loathing in Rural England and if you like brit humor, it will have you dry heaving.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe
