Or Newegg, or Buy.com?  Game looks nice, but I hate cell phones.

(A cell phone that takes pictures?  How nice.  How about a cell phone that fucking works?)

I want to play!

Holy crap.

I leave for a month, and come back to find The Great Bane of Great Danes banned, and a thread where fully half of the posts don't drip with patronizing bile.

I ... I don't know you people at all.

Um, never mind.

Wow, we should be passing around some "Fags up threads better than Geld" titles for lots of people in this thread. Because really, this thread couldn't be more fagged up if Liberace himself came back from the dead and did a one-man rendition of The Wizard of Oz as written by a Haight Ashbury drag queen on a bender.

I agree. I try to spend this lifetime steering clear of all things Japan. Games are the obvious one I can't avoid. Cartoons, however, I can.

Actually, I believe Lore's Geek Hierarchy has people calling it "japanimation" as geekier than those who call it "anime."

I call it "crapanimation" but then I'm sort of an artistic elitest.  I'm also one of those strange people that thought this guy was an idiot too.

I guess this is my admission to having no taste.  Personally, I just don't get the whole anime fascination.  It's almost like a fettish.

I agree, there are definitely a lot of people out there who are into anime just because it's anime.  Quality of art or story don't come into play for them.  Sure, there are a few out there that are good, but the vast majority are crap.

As a huge nerd (see avatar) I must say not all anime is bad.  Some is even good.  Just avoid anything where the protagonist is a child or teenager, and you're weeding out 50% of the garbage right there.  It's like anything else.  The majority of it is crap, some of it is well-written with good characters.

Yes, well that's true of everything. Most of everything is crap. But the best Anime is quite good.

I can see people liking Anime in general, because it has different sensibilities. A different overall art style, different stylistic conventions, often wacky sense of humor, etc etc. It also provides some things you just won't find in the US otherwise.

Rurouni Kenshin
Love Hina
Cowboy Bebop
Naruto
Anything by Studio Ghibli
Tokyo Godfathers
Ebichu
Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu
Hunter X Hunter

The three highlighted at the end are EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD and even most of the "anime fans" haven't seen them. I worked in an anime store - the fanbase made me despise 90% of the anime out there. I've seen about 200 series - many by choice, many not by choice - and an equal if not larger number of movies. I've distilled the entire phenomenon down to the 9 items above (18 if you count the 9 Ghibli movies as seperate).

Anime is really just animation from Japan.

And people wonder why it's crazy as fuck most of the time.

Personally the artistic style of anime appeals to me, but every anime I've seen has everything way overdone. People flipping out because something small went wrong, or running around crying because someone called them a name. Then the extreme drama of everything, I once saw an anime where an assasination was so full of vanity shots, slow-mo's, introspection, and view swapping that I just left the room right then and there. I mean jesus, talk about overdone.

I'm willing to not lay down judgement on ALL anime, but I haven't seen anything I like. I also haven't seen anything in Schild's list, but I'm also not about to go out of my way to see something I so far haven't liked.

My favorite scene from every anime ever:

Clueless girl: Something naive!
Group of friends: No, you're misunderstanding the situation!
Clueless girl: But that means...
Group of friends: Right...
Clueless girl: Something equally naive!
Group of friends: Gah! <drops appear on heads and all fall over>
