Only two things about it:

1] Free with purchase of Guitar Hero 5.   awesome, for real

2] Queen - "I Want it All".   Heart Heart Heart

Van Halen songs really illustrate a current flaw of the guitar rhythm games : if you know a song sufficiently well, you can't play it at anything but expert level.  Namely, everything else will be undercharted by comparison and you'll find yourself strumming notes that have been removed "for your convenience" out of habit.

Unless you don't live in NA. Otherwise I'd be interested. Did this get released?

Also, wut?

I notice this way more heavily with drums than with any of the other instruments to be fair...for most GH/Rock Band songs I now basically kinda check out and let the visuals dictate my hands, rather than my guitar side actually taking over...without frets there's enough instrumental disconnect that I don't feel the need to take the actual song played on a guitar to the controller...yet...rumor has it the next Harmonix step is to go full on instruments with the guitars.  They've been talking to Fender about partnering for the controllers.

Definitely won't be over if what Astorax is saying is true, about making the guitar mimicry a little more realistic.

As for the whole VH thing, this is a bit overdue.

How do you do hammer-ons with a plastic guitar?

Was that a serious question, or have you really never played any of them? (you hit the fret key without strumming)

Now there's a feature that would actually get me to upgrade past the PS2 versions.

No keys high on the neck for tapping.

It was semi-serious.  My daughter plays and loves these games.  I buy them for her because she gets to have fun with her friends and I get to watch her appreciate the music that I grew up with.  It's a win-win.

I find it easier to play most songs on a real guitar (or bass)  rather than the game.  I don't know why it is, but it's harder for me to play the plastic guitar than it is to play a real guitar.  I guess once you get your brain wrapped around a fretboard, the controller just doesn't seem right with many of the songs.  I really do like and appreciate what these games do for music appreciation though.

Maybe it will become so realistic that people have to actually learn to play the fucking guitar to play the game.  Wouldn't that be a hoot?

These games are seriously mind numbing.

There's a video somewhere of Alex Lifeson having trouble too (can't remember which song). Neil didn't have any problems with the drum part, though.

Interesting - that would kill their casual market stone dead, and probably assfuck their back catalogue of songs unless they had some way to have either kind of guitar remain compatable with all the existing songs. I'd rather seem them go the GH route of allowing multiple instruments on all the songs. I'd imagine this could be done via a patch since it's mostly just a UI issue, or if they wanted to do it via a RB3 release, that'd work too.
