Alienware can bite me!  Got an Alienware last year - they charged me when I ordered it, it was well over a month until I received it (and that was with contacting customer service several times after they promised it initially within 2 weeks).  Compare that to the 3 Dells I got last year where they didn't charge me until they were sent and I received them in less than a week.  Yea, it is a nice pink computer, but for what I spent and the hassle, it wasn't worth it at all.

Alienware also charges a "gamers tax" for rich folk dumb enough to think that spending $5000 on a particular rig will magically allow it to run games better than the computer components that made it up would otherwise be capable of production.    However, the "gamers tax" is evident in any piece of computer hardware with the word "Gamer" attached to it, Alienware or otherwise.

While I think the tone of the presentation is a little condescending, I've got to agree with the folks who don't see a problem with it.  The majority here is technically-oriented geeks, so of course you're going to have a problem with it.

I absolutely agree.
It's not like anything they claim is untrue, they just paint a really bad worst case scenario. I have an Aurora in my kitchen which I'm reviewing. I disagree with the "First to Market" and wouldn't put any value on the "Extras" claim (who cares about t-shirts and shit). The rest is accurate (allthough I have no way of really testing the warranty-service and 24/7 support... apart from keeping the thing, which isn't going too well...). The only question is, how much is that worth to you?
I'd rather spend the money on more hardware and build myself - but I'm a geek, that actually enjoy looking inside these things.
Most people aren't - that's why Michael Dell is a billionaire.
Alienware is Porsche to Dells Volkswagen and as long as people would like to pay a premium for flash - they're welcome to the business. Capitalism working as intended and all that.

Alienware make high spec computers for people who wouldn't know how to put them together, or for whom $500 is worth a couple of days of their time and a warranty. For some people the factors described on their webpage are probably relevant, for people who browse here, probably less so. I'm sure it pays lot of people's mortgages. Good luck to them.

Apple's the same deal. Use the same money to build your own pc and you'll get way more bang for your buck (which is mostly relevant for gaming). To some people this isn't the most important part, so they buy Apple because they do other stuff good.

Yep, I was a sucker - too much money in my hands and it was THE toy I really wanted.  The way I looked at it, why not indulge every once in a while (especially for something you use all the time)?  

I really wanted a pink computer - as irrational as it sounds, that was my main reason for getting an Alienware.  Prior to buying it, I searched all over for pink cases (I had planned on building one), however, when I didn't find the case I wanted and didn't find any other companies offering pink computers, I just bought it.  Now that I have had my pink computer, it isn't such a novel thing for me anymore, but once, what the hell.  In another year, looking forward to reusing the case when I build my next one.  ;)

Their business model is great though.  Buy cheap parts from Taiwan, slap an alien head on it, and charge 1000-1500 dollars more.  That is the power of brand reputation and recognition.

I had a PC back in the early 90's, but I've always been more of a Mac user (i.e. less savvy than your average PC geek). I still use Macs for just about everything else, but the Alienware machine is here for "gaming".

It's OK, I guess, but I won't do it again. Getting back into the PC world helped me brush up on a few things, so I know more than enough to build my own the next time around.

If you're not running Mac OS, it's not really an Apple system.  Nor can you run mainframe OSes on PCs, or vice versa.  Yes, your OS instruction set has to match up.  Then again, your motherboard form has to match the case form, etc.  Can't slot an Intel CPU into an Athalon mobo, but that doesn't mean you can't build an Intel homebrew...

Main difference between Apple and PC homebrews is the limitation of choices (and it's a BIG difference), but yes, you can build your own apple box.
