AV Club this time, 15 best of the 00's in video games.  I can see most of their choices but Bioshock for #1?  Yikes.  Also I'm so fucking bored of the holidays, egg nog is great though, if you add enough alcohol.

Bioshock? Really? I mean, the first half was great, but that plot twist wasn't as surprising as the article lets on, and the second half of the game just barreled downhill. I mean, at least they didn't pick a Halo, but still.

A lot of idiots think Bioshock is the most awesome thing they've ever played.  Mostly you'll hear it being dropped by WoW players as their awesome game reference when they want to do comparisons. It makes me a bit ill.

Advance Wars should be Valkyria Chronicles. Or Disgaea.

Bioshock should be Demon's Souls or Resident Evil 4.

Rock Band should be Guitar Hero. Yea yea, same devs, whatever, don't care. Really though, they were the worst thing to happen to gaming this decade.

Katamari is perfect.

ICO should be Shadow of the Colossus. But this is OK.

GTA should be God of War.

FF12 should be Shadowhearts: Covenant.

Braid should be stricken from the list. Shit, replace it with Passage or some other indie sweetheart. Don't care if they're free. Shit, replace it with NoiZ2. I don't care, just remove Braid. New Super Mario DS would be a decent replacement too.

Ninja Gaiden should also be God of War. Let's say 2.

Sims should be, well, The Sims I guess. Sims 2 maybe.

SSX3 is an interesting post.

I like Shadow of the Colossus more than Ico, but nice seeing it there. List is whack though (what list isn't). That's kind of a list of "recent" games. Fallout 3? Really? For fuck's sake, as far as rpg's go, Diablo 2, Deus Ex, BG2 all came out in the same year, and that's just the start of the decade.

Yeah, I get GOTY conversations.  Just a simple "what's your personal favorite game that came out this year" thing.  Doing it for a whole Decade?  That's a time span covering the end of the PS1 and Dreamcast era to where we are now, a few years into the 360/PS3 era.  Like Stray said, when Diablo 2 doesn't make the list, there's a problem.

But then everybody should know by now that websites only put lists like this up because they get posted to forums where they then generate controversy and page clicks.  It's a quick and easy way to get attention.

Apparently Bioshock is on the list because it invented the morality choice dynamic (LOL) and Ninja Gaiden is on the list because it sucks in every way. Makes sense!

Ninja Gaiden definitely does not suck. I wouldn't even have owned the first shitty Xbox without it. Whether it deserves a "best of" decade thing is another thing entirely. There are many great games of that 3rd person beat em up variety. I've played many of them. Not sure if I'd even crown God of War as the "best". Some of the Prince of Persia games are just as good. With more variety to boot for not making you push through the story solely through combat. Better bosses too.

If you read their explanation for why they chose Ninja Gaiden it's one long complaint. I'm not saying I think it sucks (although I do think that), they *chose* it for that reason.

Not sure where Rasix is getting his "Bioshock = Wow players = mouthbreathers" thing from though. WoW players are as diverse a demo as anything else, and despite not having played really for a year, I'd never have chosen Bioshock as anything more than a well-spent $5 on steam sale that I should get around to finishing sometime. I think you'd find similar enthusiasm for the game in our Wow forums or most any other ones. Along with "what's Bioshock?"

SSX3 is quite good. Certainly not a facepalm at the very least. It doesn't sound like you played either of these.

MGS is better than anything Splinter Cell. Not to mention being a series that broke the ground before it. And if there was a recent game that can cast a big shadow over a decade of games, it's 4. Many stealthers are absolutely great fun, but that is a goddamn masterpiece. [edit] Same goes for the Guitar Heroes/Rock Bands. How is that a "Wtf"? Seriously though.. I have no problem with a "Decade" list. But 1) It should be made by some freak who's actually played a great deal of them and 2) It should be things that actually set a standard or drive a genre forward. Things like Sims, Guitar Hero, WoW, and GTA definitely qualify. You can't even think of the games of the last 10 years without thinking of them. They're so big that most non-gamers know all about them. Fallout 3? Not so much.. SSX3 and Advance Wars probably not either, even if they're good.

I also liked SSX3, but forgot about it until they mentioned it. I'd say Tony Hawk 3 was probably the better game between the two. I'd lean toward GTA:SA being the better game, but Vice City was undoubtedly a major breakthrough in game design, how many years did we hear about GTA clones, or anything sandboxy being GTA-like. Also, I love GTA, so there.

I'd also agree with WoW, some nice polish and accessibility to the diku formula (though I'd say EQ2 because it's the better game  ). Fallout 3, maybe.

Whar's the Civ4 love? Civ4 + mods = wickedness, FFH2 alone is on my top ten list of the decade. I might have said Civ3, but FFH2 pushes it to 4. And where's BF1942?

OK, Battlefield 1942. I am not a traditional fps fan, but I wasted much time in it.. and it spawned many ideas that are common today. So much so that I don't even care to play them! Because I already played BF1942. It was that "innovative", as far as shooters go.

That list is missing NFL 2k5 as the greatest sports video game ever (fuck you, Madden), Deus Ex as the great story that Bioshock wanted to be, Battlefield 2 as the game that made unlocks necessary in multiplayer FPS's, Vampire Bloodlines as a real RPG, Resident Evil 4, and Gran Turismo 4 (or one of the Forza's - I'm easy that way). No MMO, not even the wildly successful juggernaut WoW should be on there, as MMO's are shitty games barely held together with spit, bailing wire and friendships.
