For better or worse, you would have expected Harry Potter's name to have appeared before now.

Nah, it's not a character driven series. He's just an archetype.

My addition: Captain Jack Harkness

If you can read this, you're on a board populated by misogynist assholes.

I'm seeing a few Brock votes but really I don't see it. He's awesome and kick ass but as a character? He's a one-dimensional ass kicking machine that's never really been developed. I think either the Monarch or 21 should be up there though, for different reasons but it would be wrong to have more than one Venture Bros. character.

Jack Bauer.  You can't leave out the McGuyver of torture- leave him with a rubber band and two pieces of pocket lint, and he can invent a device to shock your genitals.

All life begins with Nu and ends with Nu.  This is the truth!  This is my belief! At least for now...

I'm pretty sure just the rubber band would do.  Not that I have any experience with such a device.

I feel Bernard Black needs to be somewhere in the list.

A lot of these names have already been posted before, but I can't be arsed to find some more obscure names to pretend I'm more original than I really am.

21 and 24 together.

Jeff from Coupling (UK version of course).

Dwight Schrute (although the best stuff comes from his interaction with Jim, so they could also be entered as a duo).

Jack Sparrow

John Crichton

Jayne Cobb

Iskaral Pust and spouse

Brock was a one dimensional ass kicking machine in the pilot and for a bunch of season one.  They really fleshed out the character in later episodes though.  The rage is still there, but now it's firmly rooted in things like his accidental killing of his football teammate, inability to have the woman he loves, betrayal by father figures, and his awkward father relationship with Hank.

I think the episode with the dream machine powered by a murdered orphan's heart really highlighted how he sublimates all the shit life has handed to him by using improper levels of violence.  I think season 3 and 4 have really focused around Brock identifying and trying to work past that.  It's the Venture Bros. so he will likely fail.

Honestly, there has been a huge amount of character development with all of the major characters.

If futurama counts (it started in 99 but hit its stride in the 2000s) then Fry and Bender and probably everyone else.

I thought the drug dealers were all better characters to be honest.  Stringer Bell, Bodie and Snoop specially.

Hah, Borat is a good choice, no matter what you think of the movie.  This thread is an awesome idea for just getting me to remember characters I forgot and to think about things.

Another vote for Omar.  Arguably the best char of arguably the best tv drama ever; if we were just considering one character for a hypothetical #1, Omar would have to be on the short list.

Karsa Orlong

Edward Elric

Tommy Gavin

Vic Mackey

Joan Holloway

Dirk Anger

Anton Chigurh

Elvis/Sabastian Haff

Randy "The Ram" Robinson

RDJ as Tony Stark/Iron Man (if people can pick Heath Ledger's Joker, this should count also).

Kirk Lazarus (though Les Grossman should get an honorable mention)

+1 for GladOs

+1 for Heath Ledger as Joker

+1 Malcom Reynolds

And I'll have to come up with #10 later.

Edit:  A lot of peoples' lists seem to skew more towards characters from TV series.  I don't know if it's just a quantity thing (more screen time gives these characters more memorable moments), but as I'm not a huge TV fan, most of my picks are characters who appeared in one book or movie.

Technically futurama began in 1999 so it doesn't count but any character in that show is gold.

Harry Dresden would be on my list along with just about all the others mentioned. And while I thought both Jimmy "The fuck did I do?" McNulty and Omar were both awesome for different reasons, I prefer the guy who could kill you with a look: Lt. Daniels.
