Hi

After reading about browser based mmos (i checked some of the titles from the web games list), I was wondering if there is a "no installation" browser based mmorpg that is not purely text + buttons + some images for equipment and places.

I mean a real role play game with character development, skills, equipment, quests, crafting, trade and stuff. I played Adventure Quest (flash based) quite a while ago... at least it had animated battles back when I played it in 2005/6.
I played runescape (java based) for a while this year and it's kind of amazing for a game completely played in the browser and I'd like to know if there are other games like this out there worth being mentioned.

*edit*
changed the thread title a little bit

First off, this probably belongs here.

To actually answer your question, I've been having a lot of fun with Estiah* lately; it's got most of what you're looking for except animated combat. I've never played Runescape though, so not sure if there is a valid comparison.

I still have my character on that shitty browser RPG from the Dawn guy that I was into for like a week back in January. I haven't "played" the game since then, but I log in for a few seconds per month to keep the account from being deleted, and change which skill is being trained offline. I have a newb that's still level 7 but has got eleventy-billion points in every single skill in the game after sitting in the same town for a year.

Oh, I came in here to bitch about the thread title but the work has already been done.

In the past I would of just changed it.

You can avoid the whole messification by just using wudda, cudda, shudda.  Pretend you're role playing an orc or something.  Ork.  Neither one works for spell check.  Orck.  Oh well.

I changed the thread title a little bit. Maybe titling things isn't one of my strengths but at least I normally use capitals in thread titles (at least for the first letter, not for all of them).

Schild, Rasix. I will. I have lots of reading to do here and therefor no more new threads for a while. ^^

Rendakor, I think you are right. I would move my thread there if I could.
I had a look at Estiah and played around a little. I even mentioned you as my mentor when I created my character.
Unfortunately Estiah is another text based rpg. What I am looking for is more ... graphic based.

I also did take a look at that shitty browser RPG from the Dawn guy. Well... I made it to 6 rat teeth before I couldn't resist the urge to alt-f4 my way out of that world.

Taking Runescape for example, you have a character that you designed (a rough 3D model, skin color, clothes, gender) and once in game, you move around in a 3D world. You can fight, trade, work, fish (my favorite) and much more. They managed to do some amazing things with a java applet there. Taking a look on the trailer on that website should give you a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about.
What I'd like to know is: are there other games out there that allow you to really create a character, not just some numbers with a name and a database entry with his equipment. It doesn't have to be 3D or have a "free to move" camera. 2.5D (isometric) and maybe round based combat and/or moving in a hex map instead of free movement but it should be more then another text based rpg. Dofus works like that but thats another game you have to install.
*edit* I just checked Dofus again. It's done with flash only and it's size is less than 100 Mb */edit*
*another edit* I forgot that since 2008 there is Wakfu as well, still flash but still a game you have to install*/another edit*

I know it is possible to have such a game completely browser based as runescape proved it but I wonder why there seem to be no other games like that.

I had a candidate that sort of fits the qualifications, and seemed like it might be what you're looking for. It has character customization, factions and stat leaderboards, as well as items to collect, plus it's a free browser based game.

It's called Legend: Legacy of the Dragons, and the main site is here: http://www.warofdragons.com/

It even has a cool little "fighting game" engine for battles, that can be sampled at this link:
Battle training

I don't think this had it's own thread or was mentioned here anyplace, but I might be mistaken.

Requires a Plug In to be installed but apart from that it looks ... nice. Flashy. ^^
But SOE... I'm a burned child.

I had a look at that (at least at the battle sample. Looks nice and much more customizable character-wise. I'll give it a try later.

It's free if you don't sub or do MTX.  Don't pay them anything and you can't get burned.

If nothing else, it's interesting to see their game design.  They've done a lot of things more mature games should pay attention to.

If you think that I have a "swiss army knife" kind of mmo completely browser based via canvas and this is a marketing campaign... no.

I am planing to build a little java game but it won't be playable (read: log in, walk around and kill a_giant_rat) until sometime 2011 (if at all) and it won't be anything worth spending time on unless you like to be my guinea pig for testing out crazy ideas. It will most likely be ugly and full of bugs.

Seems like I'll be playing runescape a bit longer until something interesting pops up.
