Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity.

I am in awe of this rather brilliant move by Sony. The data out and viralness of this console is like some spawn of cthulhu.

Their feeds are not in compliance with the feed rules that are changing on December 4th-ish. For one, they're gonna have to decrease the size of those icons from 135x135 to 90x90. Which, I'd expect, is no small task for this particular endeavor. I have some true choice words for Facebook and their usability changes.

Quite sure the icons are generated anyway, I bet the frame is vector, image layered behind, then a link is created to the render by the (cache) server.  They use them in to many places for them not to be.

I don't think it will be an issue.

Personally, I wouldn't want to flood my friends and family with updates about my gaming habits and have no intentions to use this. Of the people here, I wonder how many are excited about using the feature?

Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put.

Most people WOULD want to flood their friends and such with updates. Asking people here is just silly. Outright silly, in fact.

Me using this is about as likely as me joining my guild's facebook group.

Did you watch the video? Its quite flexible.

I am quite sure this is targeted at people with facebook accounts already, and is a way for sony to make the PS3 more ingrained an pop culture. Judging by the comments on the PS3's Facebook page, many will be using this feature.

Wish they would just get out cross game VoIP, or at least some status update if they were even working on it.

The tweaks to the friends list is nice, as the boxes around everything looked wrong from the rest of the XMB's layout.

The Xbox 360 supposedly has this as of the update this morning... I suspect the addition to the PS3 is to keep pace.  Wouldn't want the competition to have a feature you don't.

That is different. Using facebook was already possible on the PS3 due to the browser.

Xbox is adding the ability for you to log into your face book and see (a proprietary version) of it.

Also, fine print: Xbox LIVE Gold adult account required to access these features. Xbox LIVE Gold memberships are just over $4 (U.S.) per month.

I have few gamer friends, and wouldn't use this/wouldn't get any use out of it. Seems cool enough though.

I'd just ignore it like I ignore everything else on facebook.  I only use it as a way for old friends to be able to contact me if they can't figure out any of the other hundred of ways to reach me.

So you'll have to try harder I think.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Is this why my PSN account has been offline all day?  Why does this shit always happen when I am working from home?  God dammit, I want to Twit about Dragon Age and Uncharted 2 but I can't do that if PSN is down.

From the page you linked about Facebook on Xbox: "Take bragging rights to a completely new level by sharing updates to Facebook on your achievements and success in upcoming games available on Xbox 360."
From your original post: "you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity."

How is that different?  Yeah, you could log into Facebook using the browser on the PS3 before, but both of them are adding Facebook integration into the console and its games.

I'd guess 20% of my facebook friends are gamers and they probably aren't interested in seeing me poopsocking in real time.. don't think I'll be using this, no.

And if I turn out to know anyone else whoisusing it then I'll block it fairly quickly I imagine  awesome, for real

The Xbox one requires certain things be integrated into the game whereas the PS3 one is at the firmware/platform level and tied to things like trophy updates. It's quite different. The Xbox one is more akin to Twitter support in Uncharted 2.

The PS3 integration has the same thing -- developers can add "triggers" to their app that will post events to Facebook with the player's approval.

Dude, you are probably right.  This is the shittiest update ever, guess I'll just put the update on a USB drive and load it that way; first time I ever had to do that.  Besides that I have had quite a few problems connecting to PSN in the past week, coincidental with some LAN flakiness but unrelated since the browser runs like a rocket now while PSN functions will often not connect at all.
