The other day we spent the evening watching the Iron Maiden: Flight 666 DVD.  It was good fun.  There aren't too too many bands I love as much as I love Iron Maiden.  The second DVD has a collection of each song in a different venue.  Bruce Dickinson sounds just the same and is as much a ham as ever.  And Steve Harris, well, what can you say about him?  Who DOESN'T love Steve Harris?  And he still hops around like a madman and shoots everyone with his guitar.

I think I should one up you and buy the 666 Blu-Ray.

I should purchase more concerts in general.. Concerts are a pita to steal.

Picked up Muse + Silversun Pickups tickets for their concert here in April. God damn second hand ticket vendors rape you too - 3 times! (premium for ticket + service charges + $15 mailing fee). Sigh.

Next time I think I will go break into someone's house and steal them, the jail time would hurt less.

I'd love to catch the modern Maiden in concert. Only time I've seen them was after Adrian had left (Fear of the Dark, iirc, at Irvine Ampitheater w/ Anthrax). There's a good early years DVD I mentioned a while ago. I like both singers, the Dianno years were so wicked.

I love getting shows at the casino, no fees, no taxes, pick up at box office. Not to mention I usually nab a pair of front row tickets for every show.

Will be cool to hear... Thayil was the riffman. The band could still be cool, even if Cornell doesn't sing as powerfully as he once did.

They are awesome live.  3 guitarists really make the sound come alive.  Granted seeing them live 25-30 years ago would have been awesome too, but now is just as great a show as you can really ask for.

Doesn't != can't (and I don't really agree with your supposition anyway). Fuckin love Cornell. I've got him on my twitter thing, but I've never logged into it, so I missed that. Check out the youtube he links earlier in the month, some Beatles and Temple of the Dog.

He's still not a bad singer, so I don't mean anything too bad about it. I like Audioslave. You can tell he's not the same Live though. I think smoking caught up to him. And he's not a trained wailer like Dickenson. Cornell was very throaty. That will wear on you.

Did you watch those clips? He exceeded the vocals on the album (one of my favorites), and the album was recorded in his prime. He can hit every note he used to hit, with the same level, but he's got way more nuance now. Still not a bad singer? Who is better? As far as range, control and emotion go, he's one of, if not the, best in rock.

I'll look at the clips in a bit, sorry. Some Audioslave performances I've seen almost came off like he was either lazy or in pain. Perhaps I caught it at a bad time.

Most of the live Audioslave stuff I heard I agree with you on.  I don't know if he was having problems or just wasn't in to it.

goodnews indeed about Soundgarden.

I am looking forward to seeing the new Ministry documentary simply titled:  Fix

possibly NSFW (contains needles among other things)

http://www.fixtheministrymovie.com/

The docu was finshed quite some time ago, but Al was really uncomfortable with the footage, my understanding is that only now after being clean for a long time is he comfortable with people seeing him at his worst.   After seeing the trailer footage I can see why he was feeling more than a tad iffy about letting people see this.

Just putting it out there that I'm in the Peter Murphy is awesome while Nick Cave sucks rotten ass camp.

Murphy's acoustic concert was probably one of the best shows I've ever seen. Helped that it was in a tiny club.

Murphy's not fit to lick Cave's taint. Bauhaus are alright, but come the fuck on. The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party, the Bad Seeds, Grinderman, his work with Warren Ellis. A body of work 5 times that of Murphy's in the same time span, and all vastly superior in every single imaginable way. And we'll not even get into how Cave is pretty much one of the most indisputable greatest living lyricists. I'm also English, so considering Murphy's a fellow countryman, you may consider that an unbiased opinion.

Also: The Sisters of Mercy > Bauhaus. Yeah. You heard me.

I quite like The Birthday Party, and The Bad Seeds and Cave's solo career have had their moments, but none of them hold a candle to Bauhaus. A large part of the appeal of The Birthday Party came from Rowland Howard's guitar work - sadly he died a couple of days ago. Even at their best, The Bad Seeds weren't as interesting as the least of Einstürzende Neubauten's output. Cave has a fine set of pipes and can write a decent lyric but that also describes half the finalists on Cowell's talent shows and I wouldn't choose to listen to them either. I'm also Scottish and admire the work of many antipodean mutants, so you may consider that an unbiased opinion.

Birthday Party era Nick Cave is something I can't even compare to Bauhaus... or even to "good lyricism". It's more abrasive and jazzy than anything Bauhaus did. They can sit by side on their own, like the difference between Iggy and Bowie.

I don't mind some of the Bad Seeds stuff, but I'm not a big fan. I can be objective and all that, and appreciate all the romanticism and introspection.. but imho he's more fun unleashing all the lunacy he has instead. That said, it's a bit unfair to compare even those romantic lyrics to something on a Cowell show. "I don't believe in an interventionist God... But I know, darling, that you do". Nobody else writes shit like that.

The first half of your statement is very true. It's a shame you went and chose one of the most consistantly brilliant and critically acclaimed artists of the last 50 years to try and prove it though. There's a massive whiff of 'only ever listened to Murder Ballads' around here. Sadly, no one's going to convince anyone otherwise, nothing sticks harder than music nerd resentment.

Let's talk about Tom Waits and Can instead.

Buy/investigate the CAN discography in the following order:

Tago Mago, Future Days, Ege Bamyasi, Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Delay 1968, Soon Over Babaluma, Landed, Rite Time, Flow Motion, Saw Delight, Unlimited Edition

The last two studio albums before their split are poor by comparison to the bulk of their albums, Out Of Reach is essentially disowned by the band. Even they don't recommend it. Yep, I've got it anyhow.

CAN (some editions titled Inner Space), Out Of Reach

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QLL2j8ZtxE

There have been a few albums of radio broadcasts released, of these Peel Sessions and Radio Waves are very good. But before you get this far (if indeed you do) you should start exploring the post-CAN work of the four core musicians and vocalist Damo Suzuki. Probably as soon as you have the first five CAN albums in the list (which are all just plain essential).

Wikipedia links to a supposedly extensive discography here:

http://all-blues.de/music/kraut/can.htm

It's not that extensive. I should probably start hacking up one myself. Czukay, Schmidt, Liebezeit & Suzuki are all still releasing albums and there are unreleased tapes being dug up and released too - this past year we've had CD releases of Agilok & Blubbo and Kamasutra, both soundtracks made by Irmin Schmidt and the rest of the band that would become CAN.

Of the recent stuff, I'm particularly taken by Jaki Liebezeit's collaboration with electronic experimentalist Burnt Friedman called Secret Rhythms. Last year saw the third CD from this collaboration. Great.

I heard it a few weeks ago. It just makes me feel sad. Not even the admittedly good guitar solo has any of that trademark oomph that made Corgan so special. He sounds tired, and so does his song writing. I think he pretty much lost it after Zwan. His solo album and the last Pumpkins record were pretty abysmal, but when you have everything from Gish to MACHINA II to be thankful for, you can overlook his decline.
