Damn.  Thumbs up! Hulk Rock

Good version of one of my all-time favorite albums. Better singer than the original too.

I'm digging it so hard. They have some massive covers. Their original stuff is pretty decent, but the newest album...is not my kind of jam at all. Feels like the keyboard player took over for that one, and not in that nice B3 way.

This one is pretty awesome. Definitely strong Tool influence...but I'm having a hard time finding that a bad thing.

Ok, I just stumbled on this last night due to an NPR article that popped up as a suggested article.

May have been posted before but whatever. It is something I think some of you weirdos who listen to cookie-monster music might like  Hulk Rock

If anyone here is into surf music at all, check out Daikaiju if they ever come through your town as they put on a pretty good show (they like to get into the crowd and play a lot). First song here sounds almost like it could be a Mega Man level theme.

That first link goes to some nightmarish video from The Darkness, rather than Daikaiju, fyi  ACK!

Seems like those costumes would get in the way. They do rock the Zeppelin though.

For your requisite Cthulhu-themed death metal, Sulphur Aeon has a new album out, The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos.

Death Metal and Cookie Monster are just linked at the hip. If you like death metal, Sulphur Aeon is a good example of it, IMO.

I've been listening to death metal for over 20 years. Cookie monster is a vocal taste I was never able to accept in many bands cases and most of the bands I like don't really go for that vocal style. It seems to be more prominent now though, but I'm old and damn kids and whatnot...

I haven’t listened to enough of that Sulphuric Aeon track to use it as an example, but in my opinion, the Cookie Monster stuff can work if it is also accompanied and mixed in with competent, normal vocals and great music in the same track.  All CM all the time is rarely something I enjoy.

Asking Alexandria and Of Mice and Men both come to mind, and they are probably both within my top 5 favorite bands.  Great music, great singers, and a sprinkle of Cookie Monster to change the mode where it makes sense.  Beartooth maybe as well, although that dude is less talented as an actual singer.

Yea, I tend to agree with that. Pure cookie can make the song feel trve kvlt and evil*, but after a line or two I just tune it out as background grunting. OTOH I really dig cookie monster vocals acting as a contrast to the rest of the song. Ayreon - Cosmic Fusion and Thy Catafalque - Vashegyek are the best examples I can think of right now...

* I'm currently playing in a Shadowrun campaign with heavy eldritch horror themes, and one of the players asked for an 'appropriate metal soundtrack' two days ago. When I checked this thread, Sulphuric Aeon was right there -- and it is pretty much 100% what the doctor ordered. Uh, Haemish, your middle name isn't Nyarlathotep or Hastur, right?  why so serious?

Not all of Sulphur Aeon is cookie monster - the latest album has a bit more non-Cookie than previous albums but yeah if cookie monster bothers you, it will be way too much for you.

I can barely listen to earlier Mastodon, before they decided actually singing was a good idea. One reason they're my favorite modern metal band by a long shot.

The new live King Diamond is pretty sweet. I caught a YT upload of the entire show before it got pulled.

I've probably mentioned this one before, but I'm putting together some studio playlists (currently working on my playlist 'Doomed Stoners'). Warp Riders by The Sword is so fucking epic.

Dusting off a couple for deeper listens: Gravity X by teh Truckfighters and Black Code by Wo Fat.

Also, here's another upload of the live King show, highly recommend.

That Wo Fat link is pretty dope. I lean towards doom/stoner metal over rock, but would be really interested to see what your playlist ends up being.

Just saw Shpongle at Red Rocks last night. Tonight is their last live show ever. It was awesome, glad I decided to fly out to see them. Red Rocks is an amazing venue, if you have never seen a show there it is definitely worth it.

You can see their previous show from Red Rocks on YouTube https://youtu.be/VuIV1oooN5c but with the exception of not playing “Nothing is Something Worth Doing” with the super long hang solo the show last night was better.

When it's ready.

At the risk of sounding jaded, Tool is starting to sound a little same-y to me. I never got too deep into 10,000 Days.

Same. I've been listening to them since 93 and they have been one of my favorite groups at times. I'll wait for the album before judging too much, though I would have expected them to grow more than they have. If you look at how Pucifer and APC have changed over time, these tracks seem very stagnant.

We will see, I suppose.

Hmm...I like how Puscifer has developed (the Remedy zomg), but APC went from one of my favorite bands to complete 'meh'. Too angry, the kept the bombast but jettison the beauty. I saw them recently and it was nice, but almost every song they've redone in their current sound. I was actually kinda pissed that some of the slow beautiful stuff added the bombast for no reason.

As far as Tool goes, I've been listening since the EP. I know a pretty musically-enlightened singer that used to turn me on to a lot of stuff in the 90s (because I had been ignoring the scene for years in 'influence isolation'). That's how I got to see Manson in a club behind PoaAF, Tool in a high school gym, etc. Anyway, I find their last couple albums take some deep listening to really develop the connection to the message and subtleties. I'm really happy I dug into Lateralus, became my favorite album of theirs. I never managed to put in the deep listen on 10,000 Days.

You know...I think I need to put it on my studio playlist. It might actually work really well...ironic that news of the imminentish new album finally get me to give the last album the deep listen  why so serious?
