There's a lot of bad polka out there, folks just going through the motions like a wedding band. But you get a hot polka band and a barrel of beer, and that's a fucking good time. I love a good polka band. I used to work with a bartender who shredded on the accordion (another instrument that gets a bad rap from shitty players).

Yep. Related, anyone who hasn't heard a good klezmer band live is missing out.

There are, however, entire genres that are so full of bad songs that finding a good one is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Not bad, Zetor. Really brought down by the synthesizer. Legacy of the 80s, there was always some jackass trying to play synth over your heavy jams. We had one kid "in" our band. Guitarist's friend, wanted to do him a solid. I tried to work with him to get some cool classical runs or arpeggios behind things, might've been cool. He just vamped chords with that same generic synth sound that track had over the heavy section. I just muted him except for his monitors, so he heard himself in the mix and got laid.

It's good to be the guy that ran the board. I used to do that with singers after my band broke up, too. So many bad singers.

Yea, Zetor's stuff wasn't half bad.

For some reason I'm quite particular to Eyedea & Abilities at the moment.

I like them, too.  On the same lines (and even shared members), there's THIS which I gravitate towards a bit more.

I'm kind of getting into this sort of strange hip hop.

Just found out the guy who sang for my band, my best friend for many years, died last November. 43.

Dammit.

I'm sorry, Sky.   Heartbreak  This happened to my sister not so long ago.  The guy she dated just after high school and his brother, who was a good friend of hers, both died like  several years ago or something.  They had lost touch and she was trying to find them on FB or somewhere.  Even though it had been ages, it hit her pretty hard.  It's an awful feeling.

It sure is.  Recently I've found out the same thing, older friends I had known years back but hadn't talked to in a while died.  And hearing someone you know died at 30 for no real discernible reason is quite saddening.

Can I request you guys help a brother out? Indaba Music is this indie/social music site that runs contests every once in a while for music submissions. They are running a remixing contest using 3 songs from Trent Reznor's new project, How to Destroy Angels. I submitted a remix track for the song Strings and Attractors and I need votes. I don't expect to win but figured what the hell. Listen and vote or if you think it sucks, don't.

I listened.  I liked.  :)

Brofellos, I really like it, even though it's made by children!  Well done, kiddies.  I think I'll get it when I start plugging up the gaping holes in my electronic music collection.  It's a bitch, starting from scratch but the ex-hubby took all the music when he left.  Definitely good sesh music.  :p

I like this band even though they're from Scranton, PA and very nearly nothing good comes from there.  Mostly.

Yeah Motionless in White is just outside of what I usually listen to, but I get it.

Edit: basically I am likely to dislike metal bands with a schtick or like overly-planned appearance - A7X, those guys, Black Veil Brides, most Scandinavian black metal bands, etc.

I found it because I'm a fan of Slipknot and Clown directed the video, which I liked a lot.  In fact, I might like the video ever so slightly more than the band.  At least so far.

Oh, Slipknot...despite my suburban Midwestern upbringing I never really enjoyed them that much; though 'Duality' was properly catchy.

Every band has a measure of theatrics, some are just better at it than others.

Dressing up in shitty costumes is not, in my opinion, worthy of discussion.  Unless it's KISS.   Ohhhhh, I see.

KISS? Bleh. A few good tunes and Ace was pretty good.

If you want to talk dudes in makeup, I'm all about the King in Fate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSQLzoBhkbw Live performance loses some of the layers an nuance from the album, but holy shit I wish I could've seen them.

Or maybe something more modern? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obkI7dE4o5w

I've warmed a bit to Slipknot recently. They aren't as shit as most of the other nuMetal bands that came out around the same time. I'm not too keen on the whole masks thing, but the music is decent.

Mercyful Fate took some getting used to - King Crimson's voice is an acquired taste even though he is one of the greatest metal vocalists of all time. It doesn't help them that a lot of the recording equipment/mixing on Fate's early albums really couldn't handle a singer of that range and quality.

Heart Heart Heart Devo!  They're so much fun live, too.  And those are planters on their heads, no?

As for the costumes and weird videos... I kind of like the drama as long as it doesn't interfere with the music.  Gwar is too fun live, and one of the clubs I worked for ages agi booked them... the clean up afterwards was more intense than the performance by far.   awesome, for real  I don't really see a difference between Slkpknot costuming and a torch singer in a long, slinky dress.  It all lends to the atmosphere you want to create.

If I were married to Johnny Depp he would HAVE to wear his Jack Sparrow costume to bed!  Srsly.  He would.  I will never be married to Johnny Depp.  :(  He already told me.
