Wow, the new Megadeth track sucks.

this would be a decent hard rock song from just about any other random no name band.  But this is from the guy(s) who brought us Peace Sells and Rust in Peace.

With that said, it is still better than anything I have heard from Metallica in, what 20 years?

I thought St Anger was a pretty badass album. Drum sounds and all, it sounds so low fi awesome. When that album kicks off with Frantic, it's completely fucking aggro. Best since Cliff era, imo. A few of the lyrics are hokey, but it's metal. Hokey lyrics are the norm for most bands. I haven't given a good listen to Death Magnetic, but it's pretty good, too.

So I disagree. Megadeth has produced some really good material recently, but that track ain't it. Thirteen was a good disc, and Public Enemy No 1 is what I expect from a more radio-friendly Megadeth.

All that said, I'm still spinning the Fado singer Mariza I linked a few posts back :)

Found out that Nosaj Thing remixed Philip Glass' Knee 1.  I like it.

Jeff Hanneman died today.  I am now sad.  He was probably the first guitarist I ever tried to emulate.  Somehow Slayer won't ever be the same.

I know, I saw that a little earlier.  Too sad.  He wrote my favourite (nearly everyone's) Slayer tune.   Heartbreak

Yeah, that sucks. Kerry was the first guitarist I emulated once I was actually in a band, but close enough, Jeff was a cornerstone of the band. Wish I had gotten to see him one more time, happy I did get to see them at the club level once anyway (and a few times in larger venues).

Yeah, the first time I saw them was in some crappy hole in the wall tin can club that held maybe 500 people.  I was right up front and center and it was a great show.  Last time I saw them was a large arena with Megadeth, maybe a month before he got sick and stopped touring.  They were still in top form then even then.

I saw them last year with Gary on guitar. Slayer will be fine live. Not sure how the recording will go, though I guess at this point Jeff has helped set the mold solidly enough that they can just follow form.

I don't know how busy/serious Exodus is these days (only album I ever had was the great Bonded By Blood), but it would be nice to see Gary get a bigger role. He's pretty awesome.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Metallica kicks out some Disposable Heroes at the Golden Gods 2013. Some good stuff in the playlist, Hale blowing that Disturbed weirdo off the stage, a wonderful Moment of Noise for Hanneman (King and Wylde presenting Best Live Band), Stone Sour's guitarists losing their minds for the Children of the Grave solo, Deftones singer still not being able to sing live for shit, did I see Head with Korn again?

Yet another one gone.  My first thought was that he was too young, then I realized they formed almost 50 years ago and he was 74.  Not exactly an age where it is unusual for someone to die.  I did think he looked pretty good for his age though compared to some guys...

I have to agree with Haemish.  Even I love the Doors.  Waiting for the Sun was a great song for getting high and falling asleep.   And how disturbing was The End?  Brill.  Bird of Prey is one of my favourite things ever, too.  Makes me cry.

I have to say, lately I've been coming to this thread mostly to see who just died.   Heartbreak

I suppose one positive for them is they spawned off acts like Echo and the Bunnymen and Joy Division, whom I love.  That's worthy credit.

The Doors music is great because they have no bass guitar, Ray did all the baselines on his bass piano thing. Gave them a sound that was definitely distinctive.

Usually, the thing that helps make music for me is bass.  The fact that it was glaringly absent with The Doors made some of the tunes sound a bit odd and empty to me, but Jim Morrison's poetry was too sublime to ignore.  I even went to the Père Lachaise Cemetery.  Twice!  Once alone and once with Gordon and a friend.   It really is an gorgeous cemetery what has Jim Morrison's body in it.  And Isadora Duncan, Chopin, and Théodore Géricault's site is AWESOME.  If you go to Paris, absolutely try and see it.  Try during an off time, if you can, because it can get crowded.  I was lucky the first time alone, but it was pretty full when I went a week later.

Yes, I like poetry.  Sue me.

It's tougher to get less mainstream than me. I'm mostly listening to manouche and fado right now (and I just paid a buck for 100 russian classical songs mostly for the saber dance and some Mussorgsky).

But the Doors are a straight-up amazing band. The Unknown Soldier? When the Music's Over? The Crystal Ship? People Are Strange? Their brief catalog is filled with amazing.

And for all that Jim Morrisson gets the attention, Manzarek was probably the most important piece of the puzzle, musically.

I have more taste than to partake in all the shitty metal and classic rock that tends to permeate this thread.   Ohhhhh, I see.

The Doors are a band whose legacy is largely sustained by pimply faced pre-teens that have Doors patches sewn onto their denim jackets while toting around a copy of No One Here Gets Out Alive in order to seem edgy.

He was certainly the most talented of the crew.

The radio hits I agree with you on.  I never cared for the lyrics but listening to the album songs that never get played on the radio was quite an experience, a lot musically good stuff going on there compared to most bands of the era.

Everyone's tastes are different.

ima fake edit since you edited while I was posting:

I so agree with this.  I wouldn't listen to them for years because of how everyone would wank on about Jim Morrison being some great being.  Sure, he's a poet who could spin a word but the real strength of the band to me became the music, and not only the songs from the radio that every teenage dork knows.
