Was that from Eurovision 1999?

That is like textbook late 90s-early 00s trance there.

Maybe it's an indicator of how long it takes for a sound to become mainstream. In keeping with the reminders of past styles, she looks like Kate Bush and sings/dances it live in bare feet. I can't help myself though, it's awesomely textbook.

Eurovision result spoiler:

While I'm at it, you have to see San Marino's Eurovision entry. Internet health warning: you cannot unhear this.  ACK!

Doc Watson died

There have been a lot of very influential, although probably not well known, artists dying lately.

the new Gillian Welch (I mentioned upthread a few posts). I'm /really/ digging that album, actually learning some of it on guitar.

And in serendipity, the Egg just announced a date with these two that goes on sale Friday. I'm so excited, this is pretty much all I've listened to for the last couple weeks.

And what an odd month it will be in July. Friday night seeing Welch at the Egg, then that next monday seeing Iron Maiden. Couple weeks later we see Santana/Allmans on a friday night and that following wednesday it's the crazy Anthrax/Slayer/Motorhead/Slipknot bill.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Thanks for the heads-up. Both bands on right now are pretty good (The Soul Rebels & some long name). The chick on #2 can sing like a mofo.

I'll be tuning in for Rodrigo & Gabby and Devil Makes Three tomorrow. And Gary Clark, Jr!

Ah, they have Bernie Worrell on keys...now it makes more sense. Hot band (the Bernstein one).

Caught Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, awesomeness. But the top of the day was Rodrigo and Gabriela with a great backing band.

I don't think I would pay 10 bucks to see Van Halen. Eddie was so drunken and slurry the last two shows here in Seattle.  Think they ended the second one after six songs.

That wagon is very slippery. He was pretty smashed when I saw him back on the Gary Cherone tour but still played guitar like a mofo.

Another really cool daily deal from Wolfgang's Vault:

http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/hugh-masekela/concerts/record-plant-february-24-1974.html

You should at least check out the stream. I'm not a huge fan of jazz from that era, but the tribal beats and vocals really elevate it.

Mongolian throat singing meets a thumping bass. As the first comment says: "Fuck. YES! More!"'

I saw them live at a festival for New Year, mid-afternoon. Nobody knew much about them at first, but by the end they had hundreds of people dancing.

Quite a bit off the normal for here, but Frank Ocean's album is out now. While being tremendously talented, this is notable because with the release of the album, he has come out, which given the culture of R&B/Hip Hop is rather a big deal.

His first TV appearance was on Fallon performing "Bad Religion", which is the song that touches on the subject, and makes it pretty heart-breaking.

Cage the Elephant is from about 30 minutes west of where I grew up.  I'm not sure I dig their music, but it's still pretty cool.

This is a beautiful manifesto:

They say that we ain't got the style, we ain't got the class
We ain't got the tunes that's goin' to put us on the map
And I'm a phony in disguise, tryin' to make the radio
I'm an anti-social anarchist who sounds like so and so

They say I'm just a stupid kid, just a crazy radical
Rock and roll is dead, I probably should've stayed in school
Another generation X who somehow slipped up through the crack
Oh, they'd love to see me fall but I'm already on my back

So it goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit but you know I never bother
It goes to one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit, they can kiss the back of my hand

Now I know I'm not a saint, I been a sinner all my life
I ain't tryin' to hide my flaws, I'd rather keep them in the light
They wanna criticize, scrutinize, cast another stone
Burn me at the stake and sit and watch it from the throne

They say the devil is my pal, I do a lotta drugs
The crowd will only like me if they're really fuckin' drunk
They think they know my thoughts, but they don't know the least
If they listened to the words they'd find the message that's beneath

But it goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit even though they never bother
It goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit, they can kiss the back of my hand

You hear that? You hear what's comin'?
Oh, you better run for the hills 'cause we're comin' to your town
And we're gonna burn that motherfucker down

Here's the moral to the story, we don't do it for the glory
We don't do it for the money, we don't do it for the things
So all the critics who despise us go ahead and criticize us
It's your charity that drives us, adds the fire to our flames

And it goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit but you know I never bother
It goes in one ear, and right out the other
I'm only playin' music 'cause you know I fuckin' love it

Ok, so 5th row Maiden was right in front of Bruce's left riser...and the subwoofers. I forgot to pack ear plugs and my left ear is fucked up yet again (Skynyrd really popped it hard, though). Also forgot to tell my buddy that we were 5th row, after three security checkpoints and getting wristbands for front access, he's like 'where the fuck ARE these seats, dude?'  DRILLING AND MANLINESS

But goddamn was it a good show. I went with a buddy and next to me was a kid from Poland who was doing a six show run, helped him hold up his flag for a bit and he really came out of his shell and we sang wicked loud...kinda feel bad for the guys in front of us, but it was fun. Always better when you've got a nice section of folks getting into it and singing and fist pumping. Seventh Son wasn't my favorite album (or in my top five even), but still enough awesomeness in the set.

Moonchild
Can I Play With Madness
The Prisoner
2 Minutes to Midnight
Afraid to Shoot Strangers
The Trooper
The Number of the Beast
Phantom of the Opera
Run to the Hills
Wasted Years
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
The Clairvoyant
Fear of the Dark
Iron Maiden
Encore:
Aces High
The Evil That Men Do
Running Free

Enjoyed the Cooper set more than I expected, he's got some good LA merc talent backing him. And for reals: I  Heart Orianthi.

Epic end of the first half of Baroness' magnificent double Sludge/Prog comedown album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfeETshTvh0

Yellow & Green is astonishing - it honestly doesn't even make sense to call it Sludge/Prog anymore. They've moved so far beyond all that.
Baizley's lyrics frequently fall on themes of escape; that's what this album feels like. Escaping every expectation of a metal band.
