While I like Sleep, I think you missed a couple decades of that genre.

And thank god they didn't. This new stuff, especially the first video filmed in black and white, smacks of hipster bs to me. Don't get me wrong, I think that Black Sabbath, King Crimson and Blue Oyster Cult were necessary progressions along a road, but to get stuck there would have been unfortunate. That Ozzie evolved into faster, melodic sound single-handedly saved metal from pure unadulterated thrash trash. What else was there to rely on to keep some vestige of simple song writing? Maiden? We'd all have been fed a steady diet of Poison/Ratt and eventually slit our wrists.

I really do not like Ozzy without Sabbath.  All that solo stuff of his is almost intolerable.  That must seems strange.

While Jake E. Lee is/was a beast on the guitar, after the albums with Randy I could care less about Ozzy.   If not for Randy Ozzy would have just been a footnote in Black Sabbath's history.

You can't seriously say that Ozzy isn't a good songwriter. Just the first solo album, Bilzzard of Oz, is replete with classics:

No.   Title   Writer(s)   Length
1.   "I Don't Know"
2.   "Crazy Train"
3.   "Goodbye to Romance"
4.   "Dee"     Rhoads
5.   "Suicide Solution"
6.   "Mr Crowley"
7.   "No Bone Movies"
8.   "Revelation (Mother Earth)"
9.   "Steal Away (The Night)"

At least six of those are indelible Metal classics imho.

Don't get me wrong, I love Rhoads, but he's only marginally responsible for the content of the album, only having written one of those songs, Dee.

I feel that later albums weren't as great, but there are still quite a few goodies in there, like Bark at the Moon, Shot in the Dark, and I really like his latest album, specifically Let Me Hear You Scream.

YMMV, but seriously, that early trudge metal was slated for extinction.

Ozzy's best songwriting comes in collaboration with a good guitar player. For instance, his post Jake E. Lee stuff (Shot in the Dark was a real mediocre album IMO) was as good as it was because of his work with Zakk Wilde (who wrote the guitar parts for Let Me Hear You Scream, AFAIK). He is a good songwriter, but he needs a good guitarist to really make those songs memorable.

I saw Oz on fat glam Ozzy tour with Jake, Ultimate Sin. Kinda sad. The fact that the opener was FUCKING METALLICA on the MASTER OF PUPPETS TOUR with FUCKING CLIFF only made it that much worse. Randy's albums were amazing. I'm not the biggest fan of Kerslake and Daisley compared to Geez and Ward (but Geez is one of my big four of Geez, Ged, Steve and Cliff), but still Ozzy's best post-Sabbath stuff. I like Born Again (Sab's post-Dio work with Ian Gillan) better than most of Oz's later material. I love listening to Zakk rip it but No Rest's songs don't stand the test of time, though Zakk's parts are phenomenal still.

Mercyful Fate - Satan's Fall Released the same year as Bark at the Moon.
Metallica - Call of Ktulu Released the next year.

Ozzy was a joke in 83 and for years after.

I don't think I've mentioned Wolfgang's Vault in a while, I bought another year of membership and it continues to be an awesome deal. Just bought a FLAC version of Peter Green's last Mac performance in London, just a smoking set. PG + Danny Kirwin is right up there with any duo like Betts/Allman or Trucks/Haynes. For $5.

Currently digging the remastered reissue of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. Everything just sparkles a little more, there's new highs and lows in the mix I'd never heard before. 'Soon' always was the zenith point of the electric guitar anyway but its power is brought into (relative) focus on the remasters.

However, my latest discovery is The Oscillation, who combine mid-late period King Crimson-esque prog/space rock with Global Communication/Future Sound of London ambient production values. Slow-burn but fucking lovely:

Visitation [Exit]

Veils

They have tracks with vocals, too. But I love me some space jam.

He definitely has a wicked groove, and I love his acoustic runs in that. Won't bitch about the vox, because :dead horse: but the high note during the verse was kind of obnoxious.

Breaking surprise shocker:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/van-halen-postpone-summer-tour-dates-20120517

Quote
Van Halen have abruptly postponed all tour dates after their June 26th show in New Orleans with no explanation.
...
Nearly all of the tour is promoted by Live Nation, whose reps wouldn't comment. The band's rep also had no comment. A source with knowledge of the tour tells Rolling Stone that Van Halen's members "hate each other." Adds the source, "The band is arguing like mad. They are fighting."

I did want to see it, heard they're not bad live right now. But $275 for a pair of tickets says "fuck that." Too bad, they're in Rochester the night after the Maiden show in Buffalo, could've caught them on the way back.

We usually only see one or two 'big' acts a year, there's just so much talent at other strata and it's so much more reasonable. This year has been murder on the budget, we're way overspent on concerts even if you don't count my Metal July nonsense.

But even when I'm happy blowing $100/per for front row BB King or ZZ Top, and can endure $100/per for Bruce Springsteen nosebleeds, $275 for VH nosebleeds is the most expensive show we've seen come down the pike outside something unique like the Police reunion.

Good lord, Sky.

I am done with the arena rock (unless we get time travel, I suppose).  Give me a local club or modest auditorium.  275 to sit where?

$275? That's fucking robbery. Screw that, I wouldn't pay that for any band, including Rush unless I was the only audience member allowed. Fuck a bunch of that bullshit. I may be old, but $17 general admission for Metallica in 1989 at a 10,000 seat coliseum is a far fucking cry from that shit.

Well, 275 was for a pair, so it was a bit more than the springsteen nosebleeds were. And the old lady paid for those :) The VH tickets were 125 per + 12 TM fees. Another reason we like casino shows, no tax, no fees, and their venues are good. Front row in the auditorium-sized venue is about 5' from the stage; the theatre, front row is elbows on stage (which is how I've talked to Buddy Guy).

Most good acts are still 50-60/per. Primus tomorrow is 42.50, Bonnie Raitt is 60, the Mayhem thing is 82.50 (but that's a huge bill for the money). Maiden was about $100, but it's 5th behind the pit and honestly, I'll pay that all day long to see Maiden.

Primus is so on point this tour. The first tour behind Green Naugahyde was pretty awesome, but this one was ridicumazing.

And they played Tommy the Cat, so I can cross that off my bucket list. I can't even remember the set list, great mix of the eras. Crowd was really into it, moreso than the Albany show, and that always helps.

Someone posted the setlist, seems right from my recollection:

Set One

Here Come the Bastards
Eyes of the Squirrel
Wynona's Big Brown Beaver
The Pressman
Tragedy's a' Comin'
Over the Falls (DMV Tease "I see a sign there, DMV..." *plays main riff once* "There ya go, cross that one off yer list!")
Jerry Was a Race Car Driver
Over the Electric Grapevine

Set Two

Southbound Pachyderm
Fisticuffs
Frizzle Fry
Jilly's on Smack
Mr. Krinkle
Lee Van Cleef
The Toys Go Winding Down
Tommy the Cat

Encore:

Moron TV
Too Many Puppies

Funny moment: The fiancee is a convert, she loves the new album (which is awesome). We got there as the first set opened, so I ran in to catch half of 'Here Come the Bastards' and she heads to the loo. She comes in and says "Did I just miss 'Eyes of the Squirrel'? Sonofa!" That's my girl!

Some random metal I've been listening to lately that kicks some serious ass:

Supuration - The Cube (1993)  awesome voivod-esque stuff:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVzlwcWl3ms

Manilla Road - Voyager (2008) manilla road is awesome.  Everything they have done is badass and epic:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ootCaoM_mIE

Ras Algethi - The White Hypnotic (1995).  Just gorgeous doom 'metal'.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5Ov1B67V8Y

Auzhia - Key of Throne (2004).  Possibly the best black metal ever produced.  A hyrbid of early emporer and enslaved.  Inventive, epic, pure romantic music.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQWhg1_FAGA

Demoncy - Enthroned is the Night (2012) black metal is still a living artform.  I wasn't quite sure, but then this came out:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DJBc5o3H34&feature=related

Been going back and forth between the new Primus I bought at the show and the new Gillian Welch (I mentioned upthread a few posts). I'm /really/ digging that album, actually learning some of it on guitar.

In the truck I'm spinning a Julian Bream compilation, some Bach/de Visee/etc. Mostly critical listening, since I play about half those pieces.
