I found them on a Thrasher compilation back when I was a skater, back before it was trendy. And we could actually land tricks, and our skate parks were built by us, not by the municipality. There were a couple kids skating in the parking lot of the library. I told them that they could stay if they could all do an ollie. None of them could. An ollie, ffs. Posers. Anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=perQ37MwG4kHaha. Awesome. And 90's punk has nothing on 80's hardcore. Good shit.

This brazilian song is going pretty strong all across Europe right now, mostly because a lot of soccer players dance to it as a celebration after a goal. Dunno if it's arrived in the northern part of New World too ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC7tzEi7D3o

For those fans of Anthrax, the new album Worship Music is really really good.

My brother sent me this: http://mapofmetal.com/#/homeIt's more than a bit flawed, which probably goes back to the creator's biases (a ton of niche metal genres, but something like Grunge gets one entry?) but some of the older stuff is neat.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Current somewhat guilty pleasure: Forefather - Steadfast Reminds me of this band I loved back in my younger years called Mithotyn. Tickles my nostalgia funny bone like crazy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny9wN7UEAfQ&hd=1This guy also has uploaded an HD track from my favorite black metal band, Enslaved. (not new enslaved. blech.) Enslaved's melodic sense is just in a class of it's own. Voivod is one of the only bands that I can compare them to, despite being in a different genre. They are both similarly....weird. But with focused riffs and cohesive development. So good! www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ7hLveNEis&hd=1

As for grunge: They may figure that grunge is on the edge of not being metal anymore, hence the smallish inclusion.

I think AIC and Soundgarden could be as metal as anyone, and they weren't afraid to go outside their comfort zone and do other shit. They were marketed as metal pre-Seattle explosion. I give you: GUN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKSBK-aUKp4Many of the '90s bands are hard to classify which is why we ended up with the weird "alternative" label. Primus is goofy as hell, but any bass heavy band owes a huge debt to Les. AIC has spawned a huge amount of bands that have adapted their style. I think that, if you asked them, a huge amount of the non-Cookie Monster metal vocalists wished they could sound like Chris Cornell.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZx8jTNqCZQArticle in the new guitar rag about the recording of Meddle. God I listened to so much Floyd when I was a kid, Echoes is such an amazing tune. But also going from the thundering triplets of One of These Days into the dreamy Pillow of Winds...just a great album. Animals is still probably my overall favorite, but Meddle and Relics were just so vibrant and varied compared to the later stuff. The Live at Pompeii DVD is really awesome, though I recommend skipping the Director's Cut version (which should contain the superior original cut). Young David Gilmour is still the guy I wish I was in my mind's eye.

So regrettable an entire generation is destroying good metal with horrid vocalizations.
I'm happy in one respect, Opeth seems to have finally grown up.

I've been getting back into thrash and death metal lately(stuff like At the Gates, In Flames), and a lot of these new acts are really good... but the growly vocals are killing me. Then I listened to old Slayer, Reign in Blood specifically, and realize that even though Araya is kind of growling, he's still SINGING. There's still something approaching vocals that are understandable. And it sounds SO MUCH BETTER.

I understand liking Tom's style better than the distorted vocals, but calling it singing is a bit of a stretch. He's basically shouting on two or three notes for the most part. I love Slayer and I would be perfectly fine with most modern metal bands using that vocal style, but there's not much there melodically. The transition into totally amelodic vocals isn't far off at all from that. If you are getting back into thrash, you may like this modern act: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsudyBzPGEI

I just can't stand cookie monster and growling. It grates on me in a way I can't explain. It's why I honestly don't listen to much metal anymore, the vocals just got on my nerves too much to stand the rest of the band.

One of my biggest problems with thrash vocals is that I was in an 80s thrash band that had a vocalist who was more Bruce Dickson meets Geoff Tate. If we hadn't had the same guitarist throughout, we'd probably have been more prog by the 90s.
And when we went on hiatus for a summer, our drummer and rhythm guitarist reformed with a vocalist who sounded like that Vektor dude and we lolled.

The transition into totally amelodic vocals isn't far off at all from that. It's an attempt at a lyrical narrative - I didn't say he was a great singer, nor that I couldn't see how the cookie monster could come from that. Just that the cookie monster distances me from the music so much that I find it hard to listen to acts that use it. I've listened to them and I like them, though it does get a little samey samey by the end of the album. I've started listening to Lamb of God and am really digging them.

Slayers vocals are top notch, not because they are melodic. ITS BECAUSE HIS VOICE ENRAGES PEOPLE, and it goes well with the blistering music. Lamb of god. Its one of the vocal styles I dislike. I can't really explain why. Gojira and SYL are the range I love mostly. Inflames Tends to much to the high end for me on some tracks, but the music is lovely. I also used to be rather heavy into soilwork. Not sure why on that one ether. Anything that ends in that whiny tone I also abhor.

I liked Soilwork first song of theirs I heard, then I listened to an album. By the 7th song, I was ready to stop. Way too samey samey songs.

Hm, 80s metal. Back in the days when you had to go to the little dingy corner of the record store and paw through the paltry selection but could also uncover total gems. Hell, the store I went to put all metal albums in the imports bin. Metal Church was more poppy, but I loved their bass player and their singer had a hell of a voice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1lXzKItFEITrouble, I think I was the only one digging this band at the time, not sure why. They rock! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4Wxy5HzmSQExodus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMmDv3ZDV-0 Piranha That opening riff was probably responsible for our rhythm guitarist's obsession with a clean and precise fast attack. SoD, if you don't own this, fucking buy it right now. I will always have a copy of this awesomeness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkoCRTl_924Celtic Frost! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y0DjKi-Rs0Some more great sludgy stuff, Hellhammer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_dQwbsP7SgAnd more in the vein, Bathory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtXTDt1IsicSomething maybe for BW, these guys were ok. I include them because I partied with them a bit and their guitarist is Larry Lalonde who became quite fancy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKxzrjlvXTMI'm sure we've talked about Fate, but this was probably my favorite album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m9Dg9iicc4 or maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYgutHSLMeQMainstream had the Ramones, underground had Venom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzXfblm74wEFates Warning, yeah, had some of that, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkvqrCGuS10 was such an epic tune. Overkill, though they later went in an odd direction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Spz7d-3dFjMAnd since I've had some poppier stuff in here, Mick Mars' tone on Shout at the Devil was god: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1RqVXVzAgc Really strong album, despite where the band went after. And continuing to be mainstream, my first concert was Priest on Defenders of the Faith. Freewheel Burning was so friggin' awesome, probably my best early lesson in song structure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSGzVqtALOUCan't leave out the Maestro himself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blNQZc84Q5cWe had quite an awesome metal scene here in the early 80s, and I was lucky enough to be in the only actual underground metal band in the area. So much fun, and we were all dirty tapers, I owned a fraction of these on vinyl, but had 'em all on tape!
