With the outfits they wear, I always expect cookie monster vocals and am somewhat disappointed when I don't get them.

Ghost seem to be -barely- even matal.  I dig their over-the-top anti-catholic motif. The non-growly way of singing is extra powerful when mixed with their 'worshipy' lyrics about Satan. They are good trolls, with some actual musical talent.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

It was the vocals that made me pay attention, frankly. They look like a cut'n'paste silly costumes cookie monster black metal band, but the reality seems to be a much more melodic, sludgey prog. Way more up my street.
The satanist/catholic pastiche stuff just adds a surreal dimension to it all. From appearances, not normally my thing but as nice surprises go, Ghost have entertained me.

Denver band Khemmis: http://khemmis.bandcamp.com/

Good ratio of singing to cookie, roughly 80/20 or so. Not super-technical, but they have a good sound.

No cookie for me.

My problem with Ghost is that they do some really amazing stuff, but the majority is kinda meh; sometimes in the same song they'll get this killer riff going and just break into some straight 4 poppy thing. Bleh. Even one of my very favorite tracks, Guleh, has an unnecessary poppy major key break in it that just doesn't fit in well (imo).

I barely notice the satanic bent, being raise on black metal  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Really these days I'd almost rather skip the vocals and just listen to a good jam like Earthless:

New Megadeth, not up to the classic era, but better than the recent stuff. I miss Broderick, too bad he couldn't have been in on a better album.

The Winery Dogs just released a new album and it's really good. Catchy, 80's era hard rock (like Mr. Big only a 3-piece) with Ritchie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy.

I've complained a few times that I couldn't get Baroness into my playlists; then suddenly I like them a lot. Funny how music can change over time like that. I hope their new single is in the vein of the December album.

They can get a bit too widdly widdly prog rock that breaks up the song too much. We were listening to some old Diamond Dave (Eat 'em and Smile is a greeeeat album, I sing I'm Easy to my old lady a lot and she finally admitted she thought it was something I made up) and a lot of that tendency from Sheehan (and Vai) is contained by the overall song, where I think having three musicians prone to noodling can get a bit too much.

I happened to catch the Eat em and Smile tour, it was so effing great. Especially in context when we were all wary of Ed's keyboards when 1984 dropped and then he did the keyboard pop Van Hagar stuff and BLAM Dave releases an old school VH style album that just rips it up front to back.

Saw Steven Wilson at the Royal Albert Hall last week, first night of a two night show.

So. Fucking. Good.

Routine absolutely floored the place, both through the hugely affecting stop-motion animation video made for the tour and Ninet Tayeb's voice. Even Wilson stopped singing his own parts, she was that good. Full on End of Proms style standing ovation.

They're supposed to be adding a Seattle show, but it hasn't happened yet. I'd rather not go to Vancouver if I can help it.

Bowie released a video for the title song of his new album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kszLwBaC4Sw Apparently it's some of his most experimental work he's ever done. It shows, and I hope the rest of the album has this theme.

Awesome "doom pop" (?)  taking a poke at black metal videos by bands like Immortal

I'm not sure a band like Immortal needs satirizing.  why so serious?

EDIT: I mean look at this shit:

The lead singer/guitarist looks like he's trying to drop a deuce and the bassist looks like a clown with the downs.

ROFL.

Oh, I kind of dug Immortal's groove (though it sounds sometimes like they aren't all playing in sync). I just thought their look was as close to a parody of death metal as you could get.

/salute

Not exactly a shocker, but his death is hitting me harder than any other "famous person" death that I can think of in recent years.   Motorhead's music, and the legion of bands they influenced has been such a huge part of my life going back to my 2nd year of high school.  One thing that I (along with just about everyone else) have always loved is his sense of humor.  One of the most entertaining/interesting people to see interviewed.

To lose Philthy and Lemmy just months apart, what a loss.  Nice Guardian article giving a well deserved nod to Philthy for sowing the seed the produced Thrash

Performance will last all of 15 minutes before Axl gets pissy and leaves the stage.  DRILLING AND WOMANLINESS

Worst live show I have ever seen was the GnR half of the opening show on the Metallica/GnR tour at RFK in 92. The first 45 minutes was almost entirely him bitching about St Louis.

The hell with Axl, we saw a GNR concert on tv and he can't hold a candle to Miles Kennedy. Just have Duff and the dudes play with Slash and Myles. Or just have Slash and Myles play.
