Hey guys, once again, im trying to learn how to do some thing new to my computer.
I bought myself 2 74gb Raptor drives and I am going to try and set them up in a RAID 0 with SATA.
My motherboard does support this but the motherboard manual is pretty hard to read, as the english doesnt always make sense. I also want to add my old 80gb hard drive as a backup drive.
I cant seem to find any easy to understand guides on how to do this. Do any of you guys have any good links or any advice for me before I satrt?

You should just be able to hook up the two drives and set up the raid in the BIOS. Sometimes the SATA BIOS options aren't directly in the main BIOS itself, but are brought up with another keystroke during the boot process.

Well, that sure sounds a lot easer than all the guides I have read about it today. Hell, one of them was 88 pages long, and confusing a hell.
I know my mouthboard has a built in raid controller, but I am still concerned.
I guess Ill see what happens when I plug them in and go.

RAID 0 is pretty sucky, unless you don't care about losing all of your data.

Bruce That was a well written and informative post. Thanks for adding to the thread. You're welcome. I was assuming you had at least some idea of what RAID 0 actually was before you tried it.
Also, if you will notice I said I want to set up my old HD as a backup drive.
80 GB won't be enough to back up 2x74GB. RAID 0 makes sense if all you are worried about is performance. If you care about not losing your data, almost any other RAID level is preferable. (0 isn't technically a RAID level, anyway.) Bruce |

I know what RAID 0 is. And Im doing it for performance, not back up.
Im not going to back up ALL my deta, just any important shit. Like save game files, and any .docs and stuff like that.
Anyway, a RAID 0 is not THAT unstable. If one HD crashes, both crash, I understand that, but honestly, how many HDs have crashed on you? Me? not that many. Anyway, if it sucks I will just unmount them. Also, a crash is just a good excuse for a reformat.

I'm personally a fan of RAID5, but that requires 3 disks.
Did the BIOS have the settings for what you needed?

Yeah, I have seen people argue both sides. I figured I would give it a try. On the other side. I have been thwarted so far in setting it up by my lack of having a floppy drive. I am going to go pick up a cheapo on tomorrow. I am also unable to set my third drive, as I only have two SATA ports in my motherboard. |
