Good. Discuss.
For my part, I have not read the book and did not find a profound point as I did in Hogfather, but maybe I missed it. I do, however, now know where they Tourist class in roguelikes comes from.

I haven't seen the movie, but have read the book a number of times. Has anyone done both and not had their mind exploded? I have a hard time picturing this as a movie....or any of Pratchett's stuff as a movie. Rincewind seems too crazy to capture on film, and the humor is often very subtle. And half the fun of a Pratchett book comes from the footnotes. Do they manage to integrate that stuff at all?

Not too many footnotes, but Tim Curry.
Also, sorry for lack of link, my brain is overflowing at the moment.

It's an alright movie, but I'm hoping they film one of Prachett's darker books next, like Monstrous Regiment or Night Watch, or even Fifth Elephant. Good books all on their own, Discworld or not.

It's a hideously miscast, plot-stripped shambles. A total wasted opportunity, much like The Hogfather before it. I really do wish they'd think about what they're doing when it comes to Pratchett adaptations rather than smoking crack at the Mob/Sky boardmeeting and coming up with 'wouldn't it be cool if...' ideas. Tim Curry, for all of his cult goodness, doesn't work. Sean Astin doesn't work - Twoflower is supposed to be the Discworld's version of Asian for starters. Most improbably of all, David bloody Jason playing Rincewind?! Seriously, gtfo. They even dropped the best goddamn scene in the book, the discovery of the Temple of Bel-Shamharoth. I'm glad that there's finally some live action Discworld stuff going on, I just wish it was being done by someone else.

I think Pratchett was also miscast. Even though I haven't read the books.

Stop being not fun. Also, they are current working on Going Postal. I look forward to your outrage.

I agree, Colour of magic was fun.

Seriously, I wanted to like Hogfather/Colour of Magic but there were just too many things that got under my skin and niggled away. And yet I often find myself defending the Hammer & Tongs Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie, which seems to put literary/scifi nerds into apoplexy at a mere mention. That got many things wrong, but it felt much more like Adam's universe to me than the previous Pratchett adaptations did the Discworld.

I'm really not one to argue opinion, and I'm not doing so now, but I assumed it was accurate since they let Pratchett come in and dick around with the production so much. Then again, when I say "accurate" I mean in context of previous book-to-movie/TV-serial conversions. Example: I Am Legend. I could get all angry about the movie but I am only annoyed a whole lot.

I bought it. It came in the mail from Amazon. Watched it last night. For a TV movie (it was like a UK made for TV movie wasnt it?) the special effects were okay and the sets and locations were good.
Other than that the movie sucked. The acting and the script were abysmal. Dont waste your time.
PS- One DVD copy of Colour of Magic for sale. Will accept best offer + shipping.

For a TV movie made in the UK the effects were AMAZING. I saw it in high-def and it was really goddamn pretty. I can only assume it suffers on DVD.

I did think the effects and general production values on Hogfather were better, but admittedly Hogfather is much easier to film, and is a much more rounded story. Going Postal is a decent story, but I kind of feel you need to have established Ankh-Morpork to a greater degree before you dive into that - and a City Watch story (or even The Truth) might be a better place to start. Also, Richard Coyle is an odd choice to play Lipwig. I'd like to see these guys do one of the witches novels - the animated Wyrd Sisters was godawful.

I wasn't nuts about this movie, but I've seen worse. The first novels definitely struck me as being more oriented around spectacle and special effects than the rest of the series, so I was kind of disappointed there (they do look good for TV movies, but I suspect this movie would need a huge effects budget to be done in a way I'd consider excellent). A lot of the jokes are kind of mangled, and the story suffers from being two stories told at once rather than one after the other, but I don't think it's completely without charm. It still feels pretty true to the books.
I haven't seen the animated movies, but I kept thinking all the way through this one that it seems like a setting that I would love to see a studio like Pixar have a go at more than live actors.
