Ok I bought an iPod and have had nothing but trouble with iTunes since then (yesterday) in trying to manage my files. It keeps doing really really annoying shit. Is there any other reliable program I can use instead that you guys recommend?
I don't buy music online, I just rip all my cds and copy them over, so it doesn't need to be a program with any store or anything.

Well this may fail the reliable criteria but you could try Songbird. An earlier version of the sync extension ate people's iPod songs but supposedly the latest version is better. I use it as a music library player on my Mac but I've never tried the iPod sync feature so be careful with it if you do try it. http://getsongbird.com/

I love iTunes, I'm just about at the point where I'm no longer willing to put up with all the other bullshit they bundle with it, however. I've never gotten great results from Songbird, so maybe I'll give Floola a spin. Any word on the supposed Amarok port to Windows? It would figure that the only Linux app I'm even remotely interested in isn't on Windows.

I was thinking of getting a PC, and heard Media Monkey was good, but it's not free. [rather, there's a better non-free version]

Issues with converting my other files. Deleting my tracks if I'd screwed about with my libary and plug my ipod in, duplicating tracks, not letting me get the album art. Taking fucking ages to do everything.. etc. Tried Songbird but no great success, same with Media Monkey. Fiddling with settings has fixed some of my itunes issues, so I'm trying to use it again, but I'm making sure I back stuff up.

Gawd I hate iTunes. This last weekend I had to switch OS from Vista to Win7 RC cuz my old vista installation was crapping out. Everything went fine except for getting my songs from my old machine to my new machine. Between the duplicates, the 'threats' to convert my songs to iTunes readable format -and then deleting the originals-, the inability to even recover the album art that was readily there on the old installation when I ripped the CD in the first place...It took well over an hour to get it all sorted out. I'm still not convinced all my songs were imported correctly.
Needless to say, when working with iTunes and your MP3 collection, always always always keep a backup, prefereably on media not attatched to the PC running iTunes shenanigans.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Are you using your iPod with more than one computer?
