Ok the story continues. Our rolling advice leads are as follows. I will consolidate the list eventually. Watch as I eventually pick someting grand. last advice: 1. get drunk and stoned and eats lots of nice seafood with family (apocrypha) 2. Smoke a joint. This time with your kids (don't have any children, that I know of, yaddayaddaetc.) (stray) 3. Draft a will.(dusematic) 4. Whisky or Rye (Sheepherder) 5. find a nice isolated iceberg to float away on (Bzalthek) 6. Start taking naps. (Signe) New advice and Feedback inline >> 7. Quit your job in a fit of mid-life crisis and become a secret agent. (Lantyssa) >>Funny story. Got an email from my Dad today that these two spiez shopped at my Mom's place a few times in the Summer. We've had a lot of connections with spies oddly enough. 8. Compete in Gloucestershire cheese rolling competition for 2010. (Jherad) >>Never been to that part of the country. Nice idea. Good excuse to renew my EU passport. 9. Quit your job, get a job at a fast food restaurant. (Bandit) >>Worked in bars for too long. Sick of people. 10. Buy a Pontiac Firebird. (Bandit) >>Was thinking of a '67-'72 Dodge Charger oddly enough. 11. Take up a healthy pot smoking regime. (Bandit) >>Would like to. No access. 12. Start lifting weights in your garage. (Bandit) >>No room. Instead, will use the treadmill that's there. 13. Fantasize about teenage cheerleaders and rose petals. (Bandit) >>Maybe. Not promising. 14. Go home yaddayadda (Lianka) >>Kek. I know you. Cost etc. 15. Go someplace you always dreamed of going as a kid... Eat a quality meal. [Do] something that demonstrates you've learned about the difference between quantity and quality. (Nebu) >>I like that advice. It's a good working principle. Unfortunately I feel the terrible need to save cash$ for various reasons. But still, point taken. Will remember. 16. Go to Montreal and enjoy the local talent... (Oban) >>A little far, but again, point taken :) 17. Get a tattoo. (Hawkbit) >>Maybe, I'm a bit saggy these days. Unless I get whipped across the country while being starved, I don't think that things will radically change. I'll ask Schild for his diet. 18. Take a far-east safari tour. Hookers and blow and killing pandas. (Rattran) >>Too expensive prolly. 19. Go do something that you don't normally have time for/allow yourself to do/always wanted to do. (FatuousTwat) >>Yeah, this probably should be the working principle for this project. 20. bike tour? (craan) >>Not into bikes. I can't convince myself spend >$1000 on a commuting cycle. But still the cross country camping trip is a good idea. I haven't camped enough this year. 21. Spend 9 days hiking the 93 miles of the Wonderland Trail that completely circumnavigates Mount Rainier in Washington State. Then spend two days summiting the mountain with Rainier Mountain Guides. (Broughden) >>That's cool. We live in Seattle (well, Kirkland). Dunno if I could hack that much, but I will remember this. Thanks. 22. Do a 14 day combined Kilimanjaro summit with crater overland safari. Kilimanjaro wont have anymore ice on the top with in the next 5 years IIRC so see it now before its gone. (Broughden) >>Sadly, not realistic. 23. Spend 2 weeks rafting the Grand Canyon. (Broughden) >>Actually, I do intend some day to save the scratch to run the 10day to 2 week Nahanni River expedition again in the Northwest Territories, CDN. Right now, not possbile. 24. Hike the Annapurna circuit in Nepal. (Broughden) >>Again, sadly not realistic.

I turn 40 in just under to weeks. Go go summer of 69!
Tomorrow in the wee hours of the morning, my wife and I are loading our three kids up and driving just a little under 1200 miles to Disney World and spending a week there.
Last year, I spent just under two weeks witih my wife traveling around Spain before she finished up her masters at the university in Salamanca. The highlight of that trip was Avila, the city was beautiful, the food great, and the wine better. I recommend Spain!

If you like sports, maybe do a trip/tour/following of for a week. Or, a lot of parks have something special about them, some special place to watch. Around here we have "party decks" in a lot of stadiums, or there are the rooftop seats for Cub's games that are just a good time and not something most people make a habit of enjoying.

I am also 39 and I do this a lot (cycling across states/nations with a tent). I apparently look about 30, which may be a side effect. When I was 16 they said I looked 25. Then I get fat and start needing another epic bicycle journey to burn it off. I appear to be trapped in a vicious cycle of adventure.

Drive around the country with me. But you have to learn how to play poker. And then we can hustle people like in Rounders.

Can I ask a personal question? Do you have some type of budget for this adventure? If so how much? And is this a solo thing (me off finding myself and reconnecting) or you and your significant other together? Reason I ask is if money is really tight there are thousands of volunteer work based vacations where you spend very little money, get to travel to an exotic location, do some work that makes you feel good (example- work with biologist counting sea turtle nests), and get an awesome low cost exotic vacation out of it as well (work and slack time works out to about 50/50 for many trips). Might be just what you are looking for. Let me know. For example ten days in Hawaii working on trails and snorkeling with humpback whales. $1875 http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/national/brochure/10400A.aspOr Earthwatch has a ten 10 day trip helping locals in Puerto Rico sustainably maintain rainforests and provide local income while protecting biodiversity. $1750. http://www.earthwatch.org/exped/nelson.htmlOr $2450 to help real archaeologists excavate a Roman fort in England for 14 days.

I actually don't h8 anyone on f13. I don't think I've ever had an all out nerd war with anyone. One of the reasons I still hang out here. That and teh flavor.
@Broughen, thank you for all the feedback but basically I can't drop anything close to that amount. I'm putting me wife through university and saving for a future outside of work. Nuff said. Thnks tho.
I'll noodle something in the next while and maybe report back.

Judging by the separate post he made on the subject, I'm guessing not.
I'm not sure it's a twitter thing, though. I've always assumed people did it simply to avoid making their posts look too SirBruce-like.

I'm just being a smarter smart-ass. I prefer to quote so people know wtf I'm typing about without having to scroll up twenty posts. Now that I know it's a twitter thing, I could only bring myself to use it in mockery of the twits.

Turned 38 a month ago. The only drawback was my first beach volleyball tournament this past weekend. I actually have to fucking stretch now or I'll be sore for a couple of days after. That blows.
As for doing something for 40? A lot of people have mentioned a lot of things, some feasible, some not so much. I'd totally recommend doing what I when I retired (the first time) but yeah, probably not too easily done in a week, so, I say this, try hiking Half Dome in Yosemite. It's hot as shit right now, but should cool down just in time for your week off.

You can get all of those in Brighton too without any problem, also Brighton has a beach.
I don't hate Amsterdam, I just don't buy into the notion that it is on some higher plane of awesome compared to other destinations. It does have a very nice zoo I have to say.
