It could just be my love of watching buildings realistically crumble and crush people to death but it's going to be hard to go back to SR2/Mercs/GTA after playing this.

Never liked any of those series anyway. awesome, for real

Seriously though, I think I'm using "redefines the genre" a little differently than you are. At the end of the day, Red Faction may be superbly crafted, but it's still an open world game where you do the same 4 varieties of missions as all the other open world games except they've replaced kill 10 rats with what looks like kill 10 buildings.  Mostly though, I was never one for being hyped up by landscape/architecture destruction. I prefer subtle things like shooting a gun or firing an arrow at a column and little chunks blowing up. Destruction of entire buildings (or even whole areas) is sorta, you know, a visceral thing I can't see as having lasting appeal.

Ok, in all fairness than you may not have as much fun with RF as I have.  However, it is not by any means a one trick pony.  The gunplay is superb, the weapon upgrades are really neat, and the use of cover/stealth/planning are essential.  Oh, there actually are subtle things like blowing up chunks of building, cover, glass, signs, and even cooler stuff I don't want to spoil for anyone.  In fact the only game I've seen do glass better is Resistance.

I know I'm being a fanboy here but I don't want to talk you into buying something you really aren't going to like.  If GTA/SR2/Mercs aren't your cup of tea I'd advise you watch some 'let's play' videos or something before buying it.

I think I'm going to BiiF this thing later today. A preview will be that it lacks depth, doesn't redefine the genre any mroe than Red Faction 1 did, and the story is meh even for games of this ilk (though I won't hold that last one too much against it).

Hopefully this will come out on steam, and then go down to like 50% price, at which will buy it.

Mercenaries lasted about 30 minutes for me, so no, it doesn't sound like it's worth playing.

Well for what it's worth I didn't care for Mercenaries either (or the demo of the sequel) but I really dig RF:G. YMMV of course.

Stardock has placed the PC version of RF:G on preorder sale this weekend for $40 USD. You get the first two games free.

Anyone ever pick up the PC version of this and have thoughts? I enjoyed the X360 demo, but between Batman and Aion, I decided to hold off on Red Faction.

The price point seemed nice, the GFWL did not.  Opting to wait till the PS3 version is $30.

I just got it last night. Haven't had a chance to install it yet, but I'll let you know.

If I can't muster the desire to play this in a day or two, it's going back to Gamefly. It was great, but the difficulty ramped up rather quickly. I may have to downgrade to casual just so I can destroy shit.

Also, it got a bit tedious. Maybe I'm just getting too old for some of the FPS elements.

I traded in my fun blog for several legal blogs. Or, "blawgs," as the cutesy attorney blawgosphere likes to call 'em.

Oh, look at that. Internet required to activate, and it isn't labeled as such on the box. I guess I'll tell you what it's like in a week or two, when I have home internet again.

FAKE EDIT: Or maybe I'll return it to Best Buy to make a point.

Unless the PC version is broken, a thousand times yes!

I should really get back to this at some point. It was shallow, but fun.
