They have to notify you if they're coming in 48 hours ahead, at least here in California. The only time they ever do for us is if we ask them to come fix something or for the bi-annual "are your smoke detector batteries still working?" check.

Tenant protection laws vary from location to location. In Illinois it varies by municipality. It is not surprising California has statewide tenant laws.

My place gives me a day or two notice, so I know that I need to clean the place up a bit.  Ohhhhh, I see.

I was talking about having more pets than those allowed by the lease, not having pets in a no-pets apartment (which I lived in only twice, for short periods).  If the policy was 1 cat or small dog, and I had two, I never had it actually be a problem (and that place was one where the handyman came in once a month to "change the air filter").  Generally the bright line is between pets and no-pets.

Very true. When I moved to Miami Beach, I made sure the apts I was hunting for accepted pets first. I didn't tell them I had 2 cats, but in case they found out, they wouldn't kick me out. I actually got away with having two cats my first year even after they found out just by explaining I was watching them for my mother who was on a cruise. Eventually they caught on and just had me fork over a single "pet fee." Helps to have both cats look similar and one to be real friendly and the other completely paranoid.

NJ laws state 24 hours I think.  I don't know if that has changed or if they vary.  But when I rented in college those were my rights (that were often broken).  I know rent from corporate apartment buildings instead of people so it's a 1000x more professional.

Giving notice is one thing, but what about the frequency of visits?  Once a month seems waaaay overboard to me.

They're also not allowed to actually enforce any "no pets" policy even if it's in the lease (in Ontario) barring pet tigers or if you have an incredibly allergic neighbour who somehow manages to break out in hives by sensing your cat through the walls...

That a raccoon? God damn raccoons... had a family of them who would take to swimming in my pool and eating the fish outta my pond 2 years ago. Caught to and relocated two of them to Heaven via the animal control warden's sword of Gabriel. Damn things are worse than rabbits in my neighborhood.

(but yes, that little guy is kinda cute)

Oh my goodness...somehow, that porcupine is the best thing in this whole thread.  It's almost as if poor little Mr. Porcupine is so used to other creatures shunning physical contact with him that he's overjoyed to have someone to play with.  Like he has his first real friend to play with.

Apparently they're really pretty friendly in general, as besides this video I've also seen porcupines acting very snuggly with keepers a couple times at the SF Zoo night zoo.

I thought the same thing, he looks so hug-able. I did assume that his funny hair cut was to remove the typicality huge spikes. Still looks funny though.

I think the hair cut was to remove the cougar skull from its backside.
