Movie critics are pretty goddamn hard to please when it comes to movies based on comic books. But then again movies based on comic books often suck. Apparently del toro did everything right that went wrong with the league of extraordinary gentlemen. While reviews are still coming in, a 67% rating is pretty good. Anything above a 60 is usually worth seeing. Perleman, who plays hellboy, has finally gotten a role he deserves. Also theres already preparations for a sequal, so I guess people are pleased with toro enough to give him more money. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Hellboy-1131153/It also ALMOST got two thumbs up by ebert and roper, but roeper loved 49% of it and hated the other 51%. But hes a dumbass that ebert brought on to make ebert look smarter.

if you're telling me this is done by the same guy who did 'league' than i think this movie just lost one potential viewer, i mean i may give it a chance after a couple weeks of damned good personal opinions by friends but god damn league made me want to put a gun in my mouth.

No, he didn't do League. He was the director of Blade II.
That initially had me worried, because IMO Blade II was a major suckfest. However, most reviews I've read have said that this movie is a really good movie and worth watching.

Goddamnit, I was actually looking forward to this movie at some point and had forgotten about it and now apparently it's actually good. Not much chance of getting to see it over here so I'll probably have to wait till I get back to the UK around August and rent it.
Mother fuck.

Sorry to burst your bubble, boys, but I saw a preview screening of Hellboy on Monday and I must say...THIS MOVIE KICKS YOUR ASS SO HARD YOU WILL BE COUGHING UP SHOELACES. Well, maybe not that hard, but pretty hard. Ron is my hero, ever since I heard him do the opening lines of the original Fallout. "War...what is it good for?" Don't want to spoil anything for anyone but the movie does seem to stick reasonably close to the origins and the comic book, and of course Ronnie nails the character of Hellboy. The make-up is superb, and with only a few exceptions, I thought the CGI was pretty well done too. And Selma Blair is fuckable. Well, as long as you accept that you will be a bloody human s'more afterwards. Anyway, I plan on seeing it again, and for a comic book movie, even for a NON comic movie, it doesn't disappoint.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/01/review.hellboy/index.htmlCNN review weights in at "meh". This, however, is a pretty bad review. The only reasons the reviewer could give for his dislike of the movie was that the end of it was all sizzle and no steak. It seemed like before that point he actually liked the flick. This is the same argument that most people gave about Training Day. Towards the end the movie just turned into a good guy/bad guy shootout. IMO that didn't really hurt the film, it just made it feel a bit uneven. I just hope I can drag my fiance to this one. She rather dislikes the whole sci-fi action, super hero, blowem up category of films.

I screened it for our theatre this morning, and I must say, I would definately pay to see it again (if i had to that is).
The only two things I could find even vaguely worth complaining about were Big Red's face (as most people feared, it isnt very expressive/doesent move much (then again, that is probably part of the character)) and they could have had a little bit more work on the blue flame inferno CG for pyro chick (there were a few times where it looked just a little bit too much like added in CG).
Other then those two minor gripes, the movie was wonderfull comic goodness, with just enough comic book style plot to make it great, and plenty of action and paranormal psycho freaks keep you happy.

just got back from seeing this one. Very good action flick. I felt the intro dragged a bit too long which is what keeps me from calling it great.
When you see this, be sure to stay for the credits or you'll miss something.

The NY Times said they liked it. An added plus is that it sounded like the reviewer read the comics.

Was there ever an explanation to that jump where they just won, yea! Go team! And then cutscene to everyone being captured?
Was a scene cut for time? If so, why the hell would you pick a scene like that to cut? Did the director just misplace some movie or forget to film some scenes? Did a page or two fall out of his copy of the screenplay?

made perfect sense to me Alluvian:
Flame girl went supernova in an effort to save Hellboy. The resulting shockwave knocked everyone out, and since Rasputin had been esentially waiting for that to happen, him and his lackey lover steped in and picked up the pieces, so to speak.
