Explains the low exam scores I keep seeing in my science courses.

Any Darwin Award nominees in there?

That article would have been considerably more entertaining if it had taken a third crane.

That was cool. Haven't had a laugh like that for a while. The sequence was beautiful too, I'm not sure if video could even trump it.

They should have just photoshopped the third crane going in,  it would have been worth it.

Funny you mention that -- someone did!!

The way I first saw this was from an email from a friend, and it included 1 more (photoshopped) pic of the giant crane going in.  I don't have any webspace I can upload the pic to -- can I email it to someone here who'd upload it and post it here?  It's pretty funny (though to a keen eye, fairly clearly faked).  Let me know, I wanna share.

Can't help but think of "Swamp Castle" when I see that...

"Well, the King said I was daft to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em.

... It sank into the swamp.

So, I built a second one.

... That sank into the swamp.

So I built a third one.

That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.

But the fourth one stayed up."

What I don't understand is why the crane truck didn't tip over sooner.  The car was heavier just out of the water with all the water in it, and the center of gravity would have been lower.  So it should have tipped then.  Something else must have happened that isn't pictured that changed the balance.

Heh, got fubared in the mail server at work, after I saw them once, I went to copy the pictures and couldn't get them out. I don't know why. But here. I'll put it into words:

Shoddy photoshopping job of 2nd truck going in water. ^_^

Red crane needs outriggers, badly.
Red crane is about to die.

It's not the lowness of the center of gravity, it's how far to the left it is.   At 90 degrees car mass is furthest out.  No outriggers, so the right set of tires become the fulcrum.  Down force on each side is the product of the mass and the distance from the fulcrum.  Eyeballing the picture, the truck needed to weigh about 10x as much as the car for that to work.

Not so.  Look at the pictures for yourself... the car is almost exactly the same distance out when it's level with the truck.  The arm wasn't straightened or anything.

That's why I say something must have happened (i.e. arm movement) that isn't pictured that changed the CG.

Physics 401, biyatch. :)

Based on its position (i.e. 2 inches from the lip), it looks like the outrigger slipped over the edge.

I don't think what you're thinking is an outrigger actually is an outrigger. You  can see once it starts falling in that it's an existing piece of metal.
