Dimebag is dead :(

Man this fucking sucks!!! Murdered by a fucking idiot. Other band members (Damageplan) were shot except Vinny, but I'm not sure who else is dead.

Dimebag Darrell, Three Others Killed In Bizarre Ohio Concert Shooting

Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan, was one of at least four people fatally wounded during a bizarre shooting at a concert in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday night.

From someone at the show...

Oh my God...

I'm shaking so bad I can hardly type this.

THIS IS NO FARKING JOKE!!!

I went to see Damage Plan tonight at The Al Rosa Villa here in Columbus. And I'm afraid I may be the bearer of some VERY TRAGIC news...

Less than a minute into Damage Plan's set, some guy ran onstage, grabbed Dimebag, and just started pumping shots into him!!! I am in total shock right now. I was close to the stage and it was all very confusing. As soon as I realized that the shots were real, I got the fark out of there, along with many screaming and crying others. It's lucky there was not a Station style trampling on the way out the door.

THIS IS SO FARKED UP!!! The breaking news here is that at least 5 people were shot and 3 are confirmed DEAD!!! They have not said if Dimebag is one of them, but I'm serious folks...I don't see how he could still be alive. When I turned to look at the stage the last time, he was still down...

Fucking lame. I saw this earlier.

At least the cops blew this nut away, but shouldn't they have had at least one armed guard or something with them?

Man, just a little security could have prevented this.

The fucked up part is that since the guy is dead, we will likely never find out what prompted him to jump onstage guns blazing.

Not that I followed Dimebag much after Far Beyond Driven, but I used to read his articles in Guitar World, and he certainly was among my favorite guitarists in the metal genre.

Apparently, all spectator events now require the performers to be placed in a protective bubble to protect them from fan idiocy. I just have to ask why, oh why, this couldn't have happened at a Celine Dion concert instead?

Bring the noise.

Kind of strange that this happened on the anniversary of Lennon's death (no, I'm not comparing anyone etc.., just pointing this out). If they find a copy of the Catcher in the Rye in this guy's back pocket, that'd explain everything.

Couldn't have been personal. I think this guy was just a fucking lunatic -- He started opening fire on the crowd after he killed Dime.

Agreed. I'm sure his explanation would have been wholly uninteresting.

They never are interesting anyway. Someone hates something, someone wants money, someone went nuts. Nobody does anything to make a good statement anymore.

I don't think he really needs the attention we're giving him either.

I like the headline on google though:

Methinks someone at google enjoys a good evening of sandals, cardigans, and 98 Degrees.

PS:

Quote
Fans on the board at www.damageplan.com poured out their woes and speculated that the gunman had been a deranged Pantera fan. One, who claimed to have been at the concert, said the man "was yelling something about how 'You broke up Pantera, you ruined my life'".

Will be interesting to see how the motive story unfolds.  It's pretty fucked up seeming.

At least Dimebag wasn't 27 like the rest of the dead musicians...

Damn shame, the man has given many people many hours of entertainment. He will be missed.

Right now I am very curious as to what provoked this slaughter, but in the long run it doesn't really matter. Like Azaroth said the psycho isn't the one deserving attention.

I don't see how this could easily be avoided in the future, metal detectors and frisk searches at a metal concert would take hours. And even if it was possible I doubt a place that takes 200 patrons could afford it. I guess we still have to trust eachother to not be raving psychos, a trust that is very fickle theese days.

RIP Dimebag.

News reports keeping say Dime, the shooter, and 2 fans are dead, and the identity of the 4th is unknown. But eyewitnesses and rumors are saying it's Vinny Paul :( God I hope not. It's sad whoever it is, but damn.

My wife is saying the Metal Sludge is reporting Vinny Paul is dead as well, but I can't get to that site at work.

I was never a big Pantera fan (as I never much liked the style of vocals) but the band could write some kick-ass music. This is a goddamn shame.

From the site you linked:

Blabbermouth.net is reporting that of the members of Damageplan, only Dimebag Darrell was counted among the fatalities:

DAMAGEPLAN Shooting Update: VINNIE PAUL Uninjured; Metal Musicians Mourn DIMEBAG's Passing - Dec. 9, 2004

Scoop of the Columbus, Ohio radio station The Blitz 99.7 FM has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET that DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul was uninjured in the shooting incident at a Columbus nightclub which resulted in the death of Paul's brother, Dimebag Darrell. According to Scoop, who attended the concert and briefly saw Vinnie following the incident, Paul was in a complete state of shock and expressed his desire to be with his brother right after the shooting occurred.

This was cribbed from the Damageplan message boards (and I stole it from elsewhere)-

Quote
I've known them for 16 years. He wasn't just a guitarist, he was a friend. One of the nicest people I've met. Here is what I have been able to ascertain. Realize I could be wrong on some of this, but most of it is gospel.

1) Daryl is dead. We all know this.
2) Vinnie is fine (I have confirmed this)
3) A bassist from the opening band tried to shield Daryl and was shot. I do not know his condition, but I imagine critical.
4) Fans were shot
5) The other member dead is believed to be Pat Lachman. This has not been confirmed, but I have this on very good sources, but it is VERY late for any of us who know anyone to get any info.
6) Dime was taken to Riverside Hospital (DON'T CALL THERE!)
7) A bouncer was shot in the shoulder.
8) Someone was shot in the thigh, I believe this to be the bassist involved, but at point blank range, this may be critical.
9) Three are dead (at this writing) one being the shooter. One is Daryl, I am nearly 95% sure the other is Pat.
10) The shooter shot at Vince, but he crawled away on the floor and hit the deck (and you would too so no bullshit posts)
11) The death toll is now at 5
12) FOr those of you arguing about stupid ####, it was a UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICER who snuck in the back and shot the gunman. The cops received the call at 10:18
13) Mitch was working. He is okay.
14) A Hammer Strength Sec guard was shot
15) The other confirmed dead is a security guard (not the above)
16) There are now 5 confirmed dead.

This is all I know, and all anyone will probably know until morning. Peace be with you all.

First, it was a club show.  They don't have armed guards or metal detectors at clubs that hold 200 people.

Second, I read a post from someone who was at the concert and said the guy got up onstage and yelled, "Phil needs heroin money!  You broke up Pantera and ruined my life!"

Of course, that could be total bullshit, being a loud metal concert and all.

They have metal detectors at the clubs I've been to in Dallas and Atlanta. You know, because people got shot before. Apparently for street cred or something.

I don't think I've been to a concert outside of a DIY at bar or VFW that *DIDN'T* include a pat down and or once over with the metal detector wand.

Granted, I live in Detroit....but this was the same when I was in college, and has been the same when I've attended concerts in California and Utah as well.

Last club show I saw was Black Label Society in a venue that holds 300.  I don't recall getting patted daon, but it was two years ago, so maybe my memory is just bad.

Some think so.  A Much Music countdown show last year - where the basically make lists by polling local artists and music biz people - had him at number one all time for metal guitarists.

I was never a huge Pantera fan, but this is some sad shit.

I'm not the biggest Pantera fan either, but I've always liked DBD. As a guitar player, I'd have to say he was definitely up there. He wasn't just strumming power chords or something. The guy created very technical rhythms, with lots of time changes/multiple parts, could play entire leads in harmonics if he wanted to...And whatever else...He was like the EVH of thrash.

To top it all off, it was catchy. Screw the technicalities: That's the hardest thing to do. There are a lot of great metal guitarists who are just as inventive as he was, but very few of them can write a good song or throw down a riff like he could. He did as much for metal's popularity as Hetfield did before him, but still kept it real. Not easy. Also, it's one thing to have thousands of fans, but to have thousands of fans who make bands because of you...and get people into your style of music who wouldn't have otherwise? Well, you're in a whole different league then.

And sad to say, but to even be a target of some fucking crazed nut like this is evidence enough just how influential Dimebag was.

But I'd still be sad if he wasn't that good. It's one thing to see an artist die from old age, a drug overdose, or an accident. It's entirely different when the guy's just enjoying himself, playing his guitar, and all of the sudden gets shot five times in the head at point blank range. It's beyond sad. This shit is so bizzare and tragic it's hard to believe it really happened.

Well, let's not heap laurels on him that he didn't deserve.  The guy was cool and all, and he, along with Zakk Wylde, was one of the few remaining to carry the torch for the "guitar hero", but there were thrash guys who were better than him.

Just look to Megadeth.  Marty Friedman freaking destroyed every solo Dime ever put to record.  To think about it, I'd rather listen to Dave Mustaine (who wrote some very nice stuff about Darrell, after the shooting) solo, and we all know that Dave is the GOD of speed metal rhythm playing.  Then there is Chris Poland, who absolutely SLAYED, on the new Megadeth record (and recorded some killer stuff, back in the day).

EVH in the sense of shredding as well as writing a catchy tune. I think Mustaine kicks ass as well, but his songs are for the most part, very inaccessible except to guitar enthusiasts. Not as bland as Satriani or Vai, but really, not by much either.

Note: I'm not saying Dime was the "catchiest" either (Personally I think Tommy Victor takes the cake). Just that he was really good at both. A lot of great guitarists are excellent at one and not very impressive at the other.
