To be fair, it's not Hyu, Hyu would have specifically mentioned Darktide.

Also, from the last time he trolled my blog, Hyu is in China currently.

You should really just play SWG, better game by far.

Set up your own server and unlock it that way. Then you don't have to deal with the other asshats playing too.

...but has anyone gone back?

Several times over the years since it's release, save yourself the time.  Dereth is an empty world compared to the early years, which even then was complained about as being barren of player presence.  I could support the idea of turning AC into a browser-based MMO ala Quake-Live, but short of that I would never look back.  The feeling of burnout remains.

Every couple of years I get this strange urge to go back to AC also.  It may be the only addiction I've ever beat that keeps coming back to haunt me.  As an explorer I really loved wandering around finding interesting little places to mark on my map.  Carefully optimizing the arrow type I used for my target, buffing up that first shot into a Cruise Missile of Doom.  Collecting spent arrows for reuse and generally taking my time as I wandered around.  Watching the world actually change with the seasons.  Dancing on Arwic's grave.

So anywho, to preserve what little sanity I have remaining I've made a list of reasons why I quit AC just to remind me each time the urge comes back:

1. Server Lag.  Worst. Rubberbanding. Ever.  It would fade or peak in severity, but it never went away, even years after launch when nobody else was on the server.  Unforgivable cheapness on the part of MS/Turbine.

2. Lack of respec.  One misspent point and it's reroll time.

3. Horrible sub-par even for it's prehistoric time character graphics.  I wouldn't have thought it possible to depict a human in three dimensions with just 15 polygons prior to seeing AC.  I still don't think it should have ever been attempted.  The world was beautiful, but the creatures occupying it were polygonal misfits that make Lego people look like Rembrandt sculptures.

4. Waay back when, about year 2 or 3 after release, they reworked spawns in the dires such that it became impossible to explore anywhere west of the inner sea thingy prior to level 100 or so.  Seeing as I never got past level 50, that shrank the world in half for me in one swell foop.

5.  Remember all those cool items you had in your last house?  Many of them rewards from quests or events long gone? And the motes and shards and stuff stored in the house chest?  They're all gone now.  Whoever picked up the rent after the last time I abandoned the game got a nice bonus cache.  I hope they got much enjoyment from them.

That's how I talk myself out of going back to AC.  It leaves me a bit sad, even a tad misty eyed.  But it works.

Just remember.  You can never REALLY go back.

I'll give this a shot.  Most people figure this stuff out on their own, but I'm feeling charitable so I'll break it down.

Because if all you have to say is "hey, I'm thinking about playing this game that nobody cares about," it can probably go in the thread that's full of one-off comments about what people are playing.  Most people only start new threads if they think there's an opportunity for an interesting conversation that hasn't been had before.

Another good option would be to wait until there's something to actually talk about (i.e. after you've already fired up AC and played it a bit so you could share your impressions, which might actually be interesting).  Then a post in the BiiF forum (which is dedicated to people sharing their impressions of games they've played) would be very appropriate.

I tried going back to AC maybe a year ago, on Darktide of course, as its the only proper way to play the game.
Fuck me. Asheron's Call is awful.  All those fond memories of doing cool shit back in the day? Somehow my mind glossed over the horrible fucking movement, UI, graphics, and everything else that was only acceptable in 1999 because there wasn't anything else available.

I almost quit in the newbie dungeon, but instead I got out, made it to a town ran around for 15 minutes and saw absolutely noone until a level 40 showed up and ganked me, then camped the lifestone.

It used to be fun because we didn't know any better.  That being said, I'd still play the shit out of AC3 with updated graphics, the same skill system, a conan/ac1 hybrid combat system, and slightly less massive exploits like speedhack.

I never tried AC back in its hey day.

I did trial it a little while ago to see what it was like. It's amazing how used you become to streamlined evolved features. Or even being able to fight more than one mob at once without dying.

I went back to AC last summer, and it lasted a half an hour. I saw no reason to stick around. I didn't even want to explore all the new stuff, and AC has always been rich with the exploration. It was just...meh. Meanwhile I went back to UO last summer, and I stuck around for three months, just doing stuff I had already done to death for years after it launched. I'll probably go back there again later this year. However, I think a "Return to AC" radicalthon would be an interesting read. And all y'alls are WRONG if you think otherwise!

AC is great if you ever wanted to play a single player MMORPG.

I've been playing since last September, and went from L85 -> L136 only grouping once, only seeing someone about 5 or 6 times, since I randomly picked Verdantine, the lowest pop world.

Only a tiny part of the content is not doable solo.  Its possible to level just by re-running quests, they all have re-do timers and pretty much all give xp.  Not possible to level by only running new quests.  Its fun for a while, since you get better and better at them, running to locations and zipping though dungeons without even glancing at a map or notes in 5 minutes, instead of 45 minutes when you first learned it, but like everything it gets old after a while.

I still want another game that plays like AC:  0 downtime, 90% soloable, massive seemless world, 500 dungeons, armor that protects specific parts of the body, arrows and spells that actually fly through the world and can be blocked by terrain, every class can self heal (but not potion chug).

They moved the hosting from west coast to east coast (Mass.) a couple months ago, and moved it again locally a couple of weeks ago since the hosting was not good (too many site-related outages).   Game runs fine from me, but I'm in Ohio.

Wasn't a big part of AC some kind of pyramid scheme where people recruited other people and the uberrecruiter became a monarch or something?  Is that part simply ignorable?

wat?  I know they increased buff timers since I last played, but the AC I remember had downtime, particularly when buffing just before running through a dungeon.  Cast boon, stamina to mana self, health to mana self, lay down, repeat.

The guild system was a huge pyramid scheme, and they had an XP-passup thing that was eventually exploited which let people level insanely fast as the XP passup would actually multiply greater than the initial XP earned as it went up the chain with the right skills on the right people in the right order.

Yeah, that part could be completely ignored and the game wouldn't lose a damned thing.
