This is an iPhone thread! A very specific one! Yes, the G1 needs games desperately. But they also need an audience willing to buy a shitload of games. Which is what is missing atm. We're watching that market. |

not real up on what it can do, does the camera have facial recognition and can that be tapped into easily by a dev.  Seems the iphone crowd goes gaga for stupid shit, maybe rip off some kids in the hall and make a crushing their heads app, with video capture and email to a friend capability. |

Only real game on my itouch right now is Bejewelled 2. I too would like to see a list of worthwhile downloads. For example, is Sim City really playable on that little screen? |

 Apps:
Shazam - Will listen to music and link you to the song and artist. Free.
Pandora - Same as the web based site. Free music.
Feeds - My RSS reader. I love this one. Yeah its not free, but it works good, is simple, and I love it.
Airsharing - access your phones harddrive over WiFi. Was free. Dont think it is any more.
Google App - voice search of google. Works well if in a quiet area.
iSSH - its ssh on the iphone.
PageOnce - an app that can track my bills and multiple accounts. I payed for the premium version to get password access on it.
Mobile Photos - Flickr app that lets me brows and upload directly to flickr.

 Random crap.
Facebook - I like the iPhone app better than the webpage.
Myspace - Wait, people still use myspace?
 Linkedin - its Linkedin.
 AIM -
 Tweetie - Twitter client. Blah.

 Apps I use:Pandora - Streaming music
Open Table - Find and reserve a table at nearby restaurants
Facebook - easy to upload mobile photos with
AIM - actually a real nice app, thought it'd be crap
Now Playing - Movie times at local theatres
Palringo - sometimes, if I can ever get my friends to install it. Lets you send Voice IMs.
UrbanSpoon - Find nearby restaurants of various types, has more ratings and types than Open Table but no reservations.
EVETracker - shows your training progress on EVE
AeroWeather - shows weather at local airports
RC Physics - measures the g-forces imposed on your phone over a period of time and graphs it for you

 Games:
Galcon - strategy/tactics space game that's really simple but gets hard fast

I'd like to see something that does something innovative with the fact that these are networked devices, instead of yet another Casual Puzzle Game or Casual Tower Defense Game or whatnot.

I used http://www.blackra1n.com/ to jailbreak my iPhone and installed the Google Voice application.  It makes calling international numbers much less expensive and being able to change call routing options on the run is great as well.  It would be nice if Google was allowed to have it on the vanilla iTunes Store, but the jail break takes about a minute so I can not complain. I deleted the CNN app and have been using the NPR News app quite a bit.  I still play Flick Fishing a lot and my daughter loves it as well.  New game I have been playing is Trivial Pursuit, quite fun and have not had a repeat question.  I have yet to find a single flight tracker with all the features I need, so I have been using FlightTrack and Flight Update with the odd use of the new Air Canada app from time to time. Not sure about networked games, since they would kill my iPhone's battery life and really rack up the roaming data charges. |

Dungeon Hunter ($6.99) is supposed to be decent for a diablolike.  I've seen it with a couple of 10 scores on it with very few complaints.  Supposed to run about 10 hours and has three classes.  I will pick it up soon but I've just been spending too much money lately on games.   |

The Dropbox app is pretty slick (if you don't like iDisk).
Been playing with mapping apps, specifically Open Street Map stuff like OffMaps (offline maps), where you can download a whole data set and view maps without a network connection. That'll be awesome for my next trip overseas (Costa Rica!).

The PhotoShop Mobile app is pretty cool too, if you like the new online PhotoShop.com.

Downloaded the Vonage app to try some VoIP in conjunction with my existing Vonage line but haven't tried it yet.

Oh oh and the AMP 'B4 u Score' app is awesome for picking up random chicks at the library/coffee shop/bar/laundry.

What the hell do you people do to piss off iTunes? It's a product that is so simple my mom can use but f13ers seem to regularly fuck themselves using it. It boggles my mind. |

ITunes, like most Apple software, is best used if you are either a certified Unix genius or a complete neanderthal only capable of dragging icons about the place like a scrotum through the underbrush. |

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Around Me is GREAT if you're wandering around in an unfamiliar town - lists nearby amenities such as restaurants and liquor stores and gives you a map to them for either car or foot. I also really like Shazam for those times when I just need to know what a song is. Looks like Viin uses the main ones that I do. |

I got it working fine in the end. It's just the default settings assume I want to let Apple control how I use the product and not me, so it takes a little bit to work out what buttons to turn off to stop them auto syncing and etc etc. I'm not used to programs that say "hey, I'm sure you want your iPhone/iPod to look exactly like what we want, so we'll just do that for you without asking if it's ok first". Example: Not letting my use my ipod songs as ringtones, requiring me to dick about copying them and changing the extension? Lame. Tankfully there seems to be ways of sorting most of that stuff out, so it seems fine now. Tempted to have a look at Dungeon Hunter but I'm not sure how replayable it is, so I might look around a bit more. Edit: Going to try out Zenonia. |

Some apps I really like, now that I've had a look about (all my prices are from the AU store): For Australia: Pocket Weather AU - $2.50 - Takes weather from the BOM and gives useful/entertaining things like tides, detailed forecast info, push options for BOM warnings, or daily forecasts in the morning, radar info, more accurate weather info based on the tower closest to you, shows temp at a glance on the icon, etc and so on. Also avaliable as a free version w/o much of the extra features but still useful. TripView - $2.50 - Train, Bus, Ferry, etc transport info for Sydney. Journey planner, etc. Pretty handy from what I've seen. But not as good as... Metlink Melbourne - FREE - Melbourne transport info. Great. ABC - FREE - Nice and simple for news. Best of the Australian news apps I've seen in a quick look. Others maybe worth a look, Yellow Pages (free) & Aussie Rules LIVE (free), GigGuideMe (~$1.50 melbourne gig guide) Games: FlightControl - $1.30 - This is a good simple game. Addictive as heck. http://au.wireless.ign.com/articles/968/968376p1.html They've added more maps and leaderboards and etc since that review was done. Other Apps: EuroSport (sport news) NetNewsWire (rss reader for google) uHear (hearing test that is pretty good, and surprisingly fun for people to 'play' and compare against each other) UrbanSpoon (best app for food guide/reviews for Melb and Syd that I've found) Photoshop Mobile (if for some reason you want to do photo effects for free) And of course seconding the others mentioned: GalCon Google Mobile App Google Earth Facebook Dropbox Skype |
