So I have a flight across the Atlantic coming up and I'm bringing my Acer Aspire One. The cheapest one. To help curb the boredom of a 9 hour flight I'd like to play some PC games. I know that netbooks are extremely limited so I'm looking for nothing that requires 3-D rendering. And whatnot like that there. Any suggestions as to what I can download before the trip?

The correct (and only) answer has been listed. GO GO DIABLO 2!
FYI: I have thought about getting a netbook and having a custom diablo 2 skin made for it and using it ONLY for that.

I found playing roguelikes to be a pain in the ass on notebooks because I miss the number pad on notebook keyboards.
If you can get used to it, those games are ideal, though. And they are small enough so that you can put on any number of variants and choose which you like most.

Be sure to pack two USB mice...one for the trip there, the other for the trip back! And be sure to buy whomever you end up sitting next to a few drinks, cause you'll be driving them nuts from the clicks.

Just an FYI I have played WoW:WoTLK on a dell mini 9 with semi ok frame rates 10-20fps so its not all that terrible ;) Hit up Good Old Games and grab Fallout 1/2? or Abandonia, or Red Alert (free giveaway from EA).

CIV4, Diablo2 or Fallout2 imo. I imagine playing Diablo 2 without much room for a mouse, or using a touchpad would suck balls though. I'd go for CIV or Fallout.

Civ....4? What? No way. Civ 2 or Alpha Centauri. Civ 4 would run like a dog.

Decision made. Fallout 1 and 2. Thanks! I've never played 'em, but a guy at work has an orgasm every time we start talking about them.

I have the first two Monkey Island games on mine. Will probably add Baldur's Gate and Civ 3 at some point.

Mentioning Fallout 1 and 2 made me get off my ass and complete the story for Fallout 3. Now I'm psyched to get into 1 and 2.

Woah, why haven't I heard of Good Old Game??? I hadn't either - thanks. I have a Samsung NC10 netbook (6hr battery life, 160Gb hard drive) and I can see myself loading up some games too. The other two GOG has that I thoroughly recommend are Freespace 1 & 2. You'd need to take along a USB joystick though. They are wonderful space combat games with an epic storyline.

You're doing it wrong. On a transatlantic flight, the only equipment you need is eye shades and a big-ass bottle of water.

On my last coast-to-coast US flight, I jammed on a lot of HoMaM3. The elderly lady next to me watched the entire time, fascinated. "It's like chess!"

Can it run Dwarf Fortress?
Performance aside, DF essentially requires a numpad. Sure, it's doable but it's also adding another layer of ass on top of a terrible interface. I am not sure what happened to cause D2 to not be picked.

Some netbooks/laptops have an Fn-toggle as "Num lock" for a part of the alphanumerical keyboard, turning it into a numpad. Don't know about this model or if that would suffice for Dwarf Fortress, though.

As someone who used the number pad to play Civ and tried on a laptop, the fake numpad thing is not a replacement.

I would probably play Arcanum or Alpha Centauri. Those are my clutch games for low performance systems. And *maybe* Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, but that might be pushing it.

Dear god man - no Diablo II, no Fallout 1 or 2...you have enough gaming there to circumvent the globe by fucking boat, never mind a 9 hour flight!

Well my PC gaming went from 92-96ish then picked up again in 2000. So I missed Fallout. I guess I just didn't... care about D2. Which was clearly a mistake.
