On a sidenote, my friend was telling me yesterday about some new show where a bedridden fat guy was said to have eaten 33,000 calories a day. I knew these morbidly obese people ate a lot, but the number just baffles me.

Seriously? I'm pretty bad for liking food that isn't good for me but aside from the pizza burger I really didn't see anything there that actually looked like they'd tried to make something that would taste good. The McNuggetini might get a pass if you ignore everything except chocolate milkshake with vodka and that would only be nice if it wasn't a McDonald's chocolate milkshake.

It sounds plausible. I watched a documentary a year or so back about super-morbidly-obese people and they had a guy who had been on a 30K+ calorie per day diet. They showed his daily food intake and it was more food than my housemate and I would eat in a week, minus any fruit or veg.

The problem is that past a certain point it's almost impossible to actually loose weight. They pointed out that olympian rowers and corss-country skiers, and tour-de-france cyclists all consume and utilise 12-18,000 calories per day at the peak of their physical intensity; however these fat folk could barely stand on their own feet, let alone perform any form of exercise.

Fat people disgust me.

Yeah, I get that.  But I've seen snippets of a few shows on severely obese people and they're getting takeout delivered three times a day.  Not like a sandwich and fries, but eight of them, four onion rings and gallons of soda.  The show calculated that the person was spending in excess of $100 American a day in food. 

Are these rich people, or are they getting assistance from someone/some entity?

As Sky said, there are some enablers out there.  Mostly it's the parents of said grossly overweight 35 year old who never left the house.

As a former fat person, that food in the link all looks disgusting and I can't even think about it being remotely tasty.

Most of those just made me feel nauseous.  I don't think I could even *watch* somebody eat a "ditch dog" without having a sudden need for the bathroom (or a trash can, in a pinch).  The "Slow Burger" isn't so bad, although personally I'm not a fan of onion rings, and I'd rather eat my french fries separately than go "Gorilla Style".

It's funny though. After the first of the year I quit fast food (it was basically a daily thing for me at lunch if not twice a day sometimes). I shaped up the rest of my diet to some degree (no high calorie snacks, etc.) but not much more than that. Without doing much in the way of exercising (couple times a week max for 30 minutes) I've dropped 20 pounds in 7 weeks.  It really is toxic junk.  I went for my every-8-week blood donation and my habit was always to load up with a Wendy's burger and fries on the way up to the donation place as the high calories would help blunt the fatigue/lightheadedness and when I did it this time the entire thing just tasted like salt. So I may have passed through to the other side like I did back when I quit smoking and after a few months couldn't stand the smell of the things.

Good for you man. Really, just "knowing if half of the battle". I think I can be a little OCD some of the time, when it comes to eyeing where exactly I am on the carb/calories limit, but just dropping a lot of the fast food shit would shape most people right up quick. It doesn't take much.

I swear, America should just ban half of this shit. One look at a random American beach photo vs a South American or Euro one should say something.
