Ok. The whole sordid story- I had a MS Intellimouse (or whatever their optical mouse is called). It worked for a while, then I started to get problems with it becoming unrecognized (USB device not recognized error). I would get a chime as it connected and disconnected. I also got the same behaviour from my USB joystick, so I assumed my USB ports were FUBAR. I got a PS/2 adapter for the mouse, and it worked fine.

Fast forward to last week- I bring home my new PC, and plug my old mouse in. It works fine for an hour or two, then craps out (USB device not recognized). Fuck. I used the PS/2 converter, and it worked for an hour or so, and then died. I switched to an old balled mouse, and went on my merry way.

I couldn't handle the crappy old mouse, so I went and bought one of these. According to the instructions, it is supposed to be used with the PS/2 adapter (included) on a desktop PC, and the USB connection should be used on Macs or PC laptops. I used the PS/2, and it seems to work.

Now I am getting erratic behaviour. The pointer moves on its own sometimes (and not due to desk vibration, which is what I thought it was at first). When I move it, it is sometimes sluggish, and sometimes not. It is rarely precise in its movement.

Troubleshooting steps I have taken-

1) Checked the drivers- it shipped with the latest Mouseware software
2) Changed surfaces- I have tried it on a mousepad, my desk, and my CoH strategy guide; no change in behaviour.
3) I don't recall seeing anything on the bottom of the mouse that might refract the beam (like tape or something), but I will have to check again when I get home.

My questions-
Anyone ever experience anything like this? Why can't I use this mouse in my USB ports on a desktop, but can in a Mac or Laptop? Will using it in a USB port cause me any additional heartache? Help! This is pissing me off!

Check the mouse by taping a piece of white paper to the desk and using that for a while. If performance is no different, change your mouse settings back to default on your control panel. If that doesn't work, switch it to USB and reboot. Also, run a windows update for possible issues.

If all else fails throw it against the wall.

What OS are you running or am I blind and missed that in your post?

The USB issue I have encountered when IRQ's or something else was loading up into the driver space with in the OS.

With my new box, I have had zero issues with USB. For the mouse pointer moving, that sounds like a driver issue honestly. I (and maybe I am lucky) never use any of that shit that ships with the mouse. Even the Microsoft ones...

I just use what XP installs for the mouse and have had zero issues.

I had XP Home on my old box, and have XP Pro on my new one.

I may try uninstalling the drivers and go with the Windows default to see if there s any difference.

I have a Logitech optical mouse with Win XP Pro, and it works fine for me. I'm using the PS2 adapter, and the windows default drivers. I don't want any of the middle click functionality mouseware provides, and its only a 2 button + wheel mouse.

Its remotely possible you got a fucked up mouse, but I'd suspect the Logitech drivers before that.

You'll probably lose the use of your extra buttons on the mouse when you do that. All my mice are Logitech and I haven't had the problem you described and I use the MouseWare drivers. Have you tried using your new one on a USB port?

Uninstall rival mouse drivers, like MS software.
Make sure you have sufficient powersupply for your computer.
Unplugged unused USB devices/hubs.
Update motherboard and USB 2.0 drivers.
Make sure optical lense is clear of any dust.
Put mouse on non-woodgrain surface. Preferably a solid, non-reflective color.
Make sure you do not have a short that has developed(for older mouse)
Make sure PS2 connection are not damaged.
Doublecheck your Bios USB and PS2 settings.
Use latest Mouseware drivers.
Make sure you have all OS updates.
Scan for viruses and spyware.
Hit Logitech and motherboard forums.
Google it.

Are you useing USB built into your motherboard, or an addon USB adapter/cable?

I had past USB mouse issues that turned out to be a overworked powersupply. I had no PS2 issues, though. Unplugging unused USB devices solved USB issues until I got a better powersupply.

How do I know if my PS is overworked? My case came with a 380w power supply- I am hoping that is enough!

I have uninstalled the Logitech drivers and gone with the native XP drivers- still very sluggish, even at top speed.

I have tried both the PS/2 port and the USB port (motherboard); problem persists.

I have tried a variety of surfaces.

AFAIK, there is no impediment between the mouse light and the surfaces (no tape or plastic or anything)

I posted a question on their discussion forums- no answer yet

I have emailed their support department- no answer yet.

AARRRGGHHH. This is pissing me off.

Necro-post (I am bored out of my goddamned mind waiting for 5 pm to roll around).

Just an update- I ended up testing the mouse on my wife's laptop, and got the same behavior (which is a sure sign that the mouse is FUBAR and that I wasn't imagining it all!). Ended up returning it to CompUSA and exchanging it for the same model- works like a charm.

Moral of the story- sometimes, it IS actually the hardware that is bad.

Weird, I just had a similar delimma. My Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 that I've had for almost 2 years just started randomly going out, light would go out, mouse would die, I'd have to unplug it then plug it back in. Tried new drivers, etc. Then last night I went and bought that same Logitech mouse you have there, and it seemed to work fine. Though I used the USB connection, I didn't notice anything saying I should use the adapter - works fine so far.
